Detective Chief Tom Farley reported a 14-year-old Sioux City boy in juvenile court custody after he admitted counterfeiting about a dozen nickels. He said he made the coins in a wood mold using a lead compound.
Des Moines reports that C D Reed, a regional forecaster, continues to predict a cold, snowy winter. He cites a northwest cold air surge even as a lack of groundhog shadow suggested mild conditions for six weeks. Temperature averages for the season remain slightly below normal.
Plymouth county relief director Harry Cannon reportedly lost a tooth after fists flew at a board of supervisors meeting Monday afternoon. The punch, alleged to have been swung by Mrs Sumner Knox, ex diry crusader and wife of a relief worker Cannon had discharged.
Police in Iowa City recaptured Eldon Good, five years after his escape, identifying him as a man who stepped from a freight train and recognizing him by memory. Patrolman Frank Burns arrested Good Sunday, ending the fugitive’s run.
Near Leon Iowa a 1000 pound colt fell into an 22 foot cistern. Fred Jones and Zone Housh fought five failed hoists before the sixth lift brought the animal to the surface. The colt recovered quickly and resumed feeding within minutes.
In an Atlantic Southwest town sheriff crews hunted highways after a trucker, arriving at a Coon Rapids elevator in an empty semi, ordered 400 bushels of shelled corn and fled saying he would pay after the bank opened. He did not return.
