A local police officer attended church in plain clothes with his badge hidden. When the collection plate came by he flashed his badge to the collector, then calmly sat down as the puzzled usher looked on.
Carl McKee of Seymour Iowa aged about 48 died at St Joseph hospital from a skull fracture after being struck by a kick from a five horsepower gasoline engine used for grinding grain in his granary Saturday afternoon. He died Sunday at 6 A M.
Permission was granted to raise the lake level by two feet, expanding water area from 120 to about 140 acres for improved bathing and boating. In Cedar Rapids, James Richard Jadrnicek, a former University of Iowa student, graduated from Pensacola naval flying school after 400 hours and is assigned to duty in Hawaii.
Muscatine residents will vote on establishing a municipal court. Petitions filed with City Recorder H. M. Hanson show 1,006 signatures, exceeding the 730 required to place the measure on the ballot.
A band of four Clarke county farm brothers were robbed of $600 by gypsies 14 miles from Teon. Sheriff Roscoe Sinco of Decatur county captured the group, including three women a man and a child, two hours after the incident and returned them to Osceola.
The state highway commission moves ten elm trees about 15 years old to widen a road in front of the commission building. Each tree is relocated roughly 25 feet with ten tons of protective earth heaped around its roots during transplants.
Leaders of 12 Jewish communities in southeastern Iowa will meet in Ottumwa on Sunday evening February 12 to discuss building an adequate program of Jewish life in small communities. Sponsored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, parent body of American Liberal Judaism.
The American Association of Small Business Men convened at the White House with officers named, but no one knows who holds the treasurer role. President M. A. Moers of Cincinnati announced $761 collected in initiation fees and a plan to discard postwar legislation, while admitting he did not know the treasurer’s identity.
Mrs. Walter K. Smith, 46, died last night at Washington county hospital after an operation for a major condition. Born in County Clare on September 7, 1891, she lived north of Washington and was active in Farm Bureau and church work. Survived by husband, mother Mrs. May Jay, and four children, with funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
A pneumonia outbreak in Oakland has claimed six infant lives in the last ten days. Local health officials warn of ongoing risk as parents seek guidance and care.
Sheriff H M Putnam questioned Earl Stutsman of Wayland about cattle from Magdefrau Bros. that vanished with the stock. Stutsman disappeared last night while wearing house slippers and light clothing, believed to have fled after being questioned. Over shoes found in his truck suggest an attempted return for warmer wear. No trace of Stutsman has been found as intensive searches continue.
Ray Hall of Mulkeytown Illinois was arrested in West Liberty on charges of stealing 700 dollars from his grandmother and held for extradition. He claimed the money earned mining coal at Zeigler Illinois. Patrolman Richard Hohl found the cash after stopping the car for no license plates.
In Brunswick Georgia two bullets including a lead slug and a steel jacketed round were cited as top clues in the murder of Dr C E B Lee 71 rector of Christ Episcopal Church. Authorities pursue two suspects as the minister native of Maryland and grand nephew of Gen Robert E Lee was shot through his office door as he prepared his Sunday sermon.
George Fields, current vice principal at West Waterloo high, will become principal of Washington high next year replacing retiring Miss Della Patton. Acknowledgment of acceptance came from Sept E A Balvyton on Sept morning. Fields, 37, has 12 years teaching, four as assistant principal, and unitary leadership noted by Supt. Kittrell. Education includes BA from Central College Fayetteville MO, MA from Minnesota, and graduate work at Iowa, Iowa State. He is 6 ft 2 in, 210 pounds, with a wife and seven year old son.
Robert Stevens, last year’s Wasiington high school graduate, has led evangelistic meetings in lows towns since last September. He will speak each evening this week except Saturday at the Foursquare Gospel church where his father Rev W. 4 Stevens is pastor. Next month he expects to join Dewey Blomgren of Detroit in evangelistic work after recent speaking here.
Miami February report says the American Federation of Labor formally expelled three major unions linked to the CLO. The United Mine Workers with about 400,000 members and the International Union of Mine Metal and Amelter Workers plus the Flat Glass Workers were removed. AFL will not act against the remaining CLO-connected union at this meeting.
The superintendent and board of education narrowed a strong field to select a successor to Miss Patton. A Waterloo candidate, Mr Fields, emerged as the best choice after thorough inquiries by Washington school authorities, who are convinced he is the man for the place and he has accepted the position.
Frank Pennington aged 60 from Willisea was killed and three others injured when his car veered off the highway and plunged 30 feet down an embankment into a ditch near Council Bluffs Iowa.

A loomarist in charge Burial will be in Columbus City cemeteries Pratt died Saturday at his home after a year of poor health He was born near here February 15 1870 a son of Adam and Rebecca Pratt who came from Pennsylvania He married Rena Sipe Fol 23 1899 at Columbus City Surviving are the widow four daughters including Mrs Daniel Smith Letts and Mrs Ralph Green Columbus City
Mr and Mrs Walter S Hood announce the death of Miss Caroline O Farnsworth formerly of Washington. She died of a heart attack January 30 at 401 West 118th Street New York City where she lived with her niece Mrs Winifred Fessenden. Funeral services were at Riverside Church conducted by Dr Harry R Stark with attendees including Mrs Effie O Laughlin Dunning and Miss Genevra McCaw.
Japanese forces struck 1200 miles apart wiping out an entire city in the south and capturing the coastal town of Longkow in the north. They bombarded Hueng Chow near Macao and Hong Kong, reducing it to ashes as Chinese forces counterattacked along the Tientsin Nanking railway front and planes bombed positions near the Kwai river.
Funeral services for George H. Dickey, 64, longtime resident, will be held Monday forenoon in Davenport where he lived in recent years. Born January 1, 1874 in Carthage, Illinois, he came here with his parents as a child. Surviving are his widow Blanche Murphy, eight children, four grandchildren, and three sisters Lena Lowe of Columbus Junction Virgie Cavanaugh and Lulu McCoy of Davenport.
Harvey Samuel Firestone rub ber magnate and ally of Ford and Edison was found dead in his bed at Miami Beach. He died during the night and will be buried in Akron, Ohio. Firestone had arrived with staff and told reporters he would keep working despite winter travel.
Ottumwa reports two women aged 20 and 16 were arrested after a gun battle in Osceola during a honeymoon robbery and kidnapping. They, and their husbands who fled, reportedly stole sixty suits worth about 1000 dollars from Kraft Clothing. The kidnapped farmer Ralph Wyant escaped when the car stalled.
London reports General Franco directly responsible for piracy in the Mediterranean. Britain orders attacks on any submarine found in the British patrol district. France and Italy will take similar action in their zones, Foreign Minister Anthony Eden says.
Mrs. Etla Cook George widow of L C George died at her Bostwick Nebraska home. She was over 70 and had lived north of Washington before moving years ago. Her niece Mrs John Rittenhouse received word of the death.
Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Bickett observed their 70th wedding anniversary in Atlantic today. He is 90 and she 88. natives of McAlveys Fort, Pa., married there, then moved to Cedar county Iowa in 1876 and to Atlantic in 1879 where they have lived since.
