Mrs. Margaret Dicken wife of Dr M E Dicken died Tuesday evening at seven after a brief illness An operation last Saturday failed to save her She was born September 27 1862 in Washington Town and lived on North Second Avenue Her funeral is set for Thursday at two at Sherman funeral home with Dr W W Bowers of Waterloo officiating Interment at Woodlawn cemetery Daughters of the American Revolution will attend in a body She was active in Methodist church and Sunday school and known as Maggie Dicken The family includes son Renton Dicken in Chicago another son William Wilson who died in infancy two daughters Mrs Hesse Minmly and Mrs Margaret Hogan and a granddaughter Margaret Ann Minmly A brother Owen G Wilson and sister M Louisa Wilson also survive She helped with Easter egg rolls for neighborhood children and was a dedicated mother and community participant
President Roosevelt instructed the department of justice to investigate every complaint about contract awards. J Edgar Hoover is also examining rumors of irregularities in efforts to supply materials to the war department. The moves align with a Senate inquiry expanding across government actions.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion spoke unanimously in favor of establishing a county health unit for Washington County at a well attended meeting presided by A. E. Baldrigee. A Legion kitten ball team is planned for next summer with Rodney Arnold and Ed Squire named to arrange it. A joint Legion and Auxiliary party and grave registration committee led by Arnot Wylie were formed, aiming for state-compliant decoration dates.
Clerk records show 1083 weddings in 1938 and ten divorces, a one to ten ratio. The 1938 figures mark a more than fifty percent drop from the prior year. sixteen divorces are on 1982 records. Early this year twelve licenses issued. two new divorce cases listed, one granted. Dr and Mrs Murry McCreedy and their son were in town from Brighton yesterday.
The Washington Y. M. C. A. beat Washington junior college 28 to 27 in a tense basketball thriller. Wells and Jungbluth led the Y. M. C. A. with key baskets as the lead swung, and a decisive late score by Westermark sealed the victory.
After a close game Coach George Freshwaters urged another game anytime anywhere. Manager Stan Kiesey agreed and favored a home floor rematch, with plans possibly for next week.
Iowa senate ends nine weeks of tax revision debate by passing the interim committee bill 37 to 13. The measure heads to the house for approval of six senate amendments as final stage to substitute the classified transactions bill for the 3 Way plan.
Margaret Clendenning died at 6 45 AM in a Des Moines hospital after a Sunday night crash in which a parked truck was struck. Her sister Carrie Palmer remains seriously injured and was moved to Sigourney hospital. Other companions Donald Holmes and Dwight Simmerman escaped serious injuries.

Washington high school freshmen defeated Morning Sun freshmen 33 to 14 in last night’s curtain raiser. Strong early performance by Washington set the tone as Morning Sun fought to stay in the game.

Features include Leslie Teers versus Ed Petesh in a 185 vs 184 pound feature bout and a Cedar Rapids Davenport wrestle-standoff with Scissors Dick. Mrs. Violence Smith of Keota spent the week visiting her sister, Mrs. J. L. McGraw, in town.
She devoted herself to the Y W C A and Fortnightly club, always ready for a larger share of work. An expert cook, she shared her talents with others and valued young people. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.
Sept J WW Peet of the Washington schools visited the county hospital to report gas victims from a high school laboratory are improving toward normal. Miss Lucy Stahl Leona Crayton Tom Duncan Richard Leet and Dorothy Soukup remain hospitalized but should leave soon. doctors advise rest to prevent pneumonia. The exposure occurred when a steel cylinder valve for hydrogen sulfide disconnected accidentally.
Evelyn Jane Ayres aged one dies after a week of illness at her grandmother Maude Raymond's home. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ayres she was born December 18 1932. Funeral time is listed as definite today with burial planned in Ainsworth.
Frank Kuhn, 61, collapsed from a heart attack in a pasture at his Eureka neighborhood home, about one o'clock this afternoon. The body is at L. A. Jones Funeral Home while arrangements are made. Born in Somanauk county, HL, he had lived in the area for 20 years and is survived by his widow, two brothers Marcus and Joe, and a sister Mrs. Mary George.
Gaston Domergue, 70, named to succeed Daladier after the cabinet resignation to quell violence. Riots spread from Paris to the provinces with clashes all day, 16 dead and about 1,500 injured. Place de la Concorde evacuated as 10,000 protesters surged and police sought to avoid bloodshed.
Wallace defeated Lincoln 14 to 2 in the grade school basketball tournament at the M C A. Wallace and Lincoln are tied for first place with two wins and two losses. Heights stands third with one win and two losses, Centennial fourth with four losses.
Miss Josephine Escher 67 a Richmond native died suddenly in Solon Iowa while working as a housekeeper. She is survived by siblings in Ohio Texas Minnesota and Washington. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 9 o clock at Trinity Catholic church Richmond with burial in the Catholic cemetery.
