Washington's YMCA launches its 1975 membership enrollment drive with a noon kickoff Monday February 10 in the Community Room. The campaign runs through February 25 with Bob Luther as chairman and Jerry Ridley as speaker. Meetings are Feb 17 and 21, ending with a victory dinner on Feb 25.
Burglary reported at 744 Perdock Court of William Hutmachers while occupants were away. Police learned of the break-in Wednesday evening. items stolen include a color TV, meat from the freezer, a Bogen stereo with speakers, an Ithaca 20 gauge shotgun, a Panasonic eight track player, liquor, loose change, a .22 bolt action Remington and a .30-06 bolt action rifle. Entrance gained via garage door.
Frederick Albers of Kinross received a suspended four month term and one year probation for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. His license is suspended 180 days. Homer N. Porter of West Chester got a 12 month deferred sentence after pleading guilty to an OMVAS charge. Sentencing for four others set for 10 a.m. Friday Feb 21. Karl Zielsdorf, 18, of Washington pleaded guilty to larceny. bond $2,500. Sherri P. McSwiggan, James D. Van Dyke and Donald Simmering entered OMVUS pleas. Morrison ordered pre sentence investigations. Simmering faces sentencing on a second drunk driving conviction.
A report by the American Correctional Association urged major changes at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison including a new prison facility, a revised organizational table, expanded medical services and work programs, tighter parole review, and reduced gambling. The study criticized current conditions as obsolete and noted rising tension from a larger, more dangerous inmate population while praising Warden Lou Brewer as capable but constrained by legal actions and limited resources. Governor Ray called the recommendations valuable but not fully satisfactory, and officials indicated some steps were already underway.
Washington County juvenile authorities push a study on establishing a group foster home for boys as a rehabilitative center. Juvenile probation officer Wyngarden invites public input at 7 30 p m next Thursday at the Administration Building. Bob Reinke of Young House Inc. will attend to discuss existing group homes and funding options, with a goal to form a study committee.
Washington YMCA officials announce a week long open house from February 10 to 14 inviting men and boys to use the Health Club gym and pool at no charge. Visitors are asked to contact the Y desk, with each weekday assigned to a different district and residents urged to visit when convenient, bringing a towel and swimsuit.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted 28 5 for a 20.1 billion tax reduction bill proposing 10 percent rebates up to 200 for all taxpayers. Rebates favor middle income families, with phased reductions above 30 000 income. The plan also increases standard deductions and extends lower corporate tax rates while boosting investment credits and providing relief for utilities and small businesses.
UPI reports Des Moines subcommittee chair Sen Eugene Hill predicts passage by both houses despite Gov. Robert Ray's expected veto. The plan would tax corporations on payroll sales and property, challenging the single-factor system Republicans deem a business lure. Lt. Gov. Neu warns of partisan Senate debate if pushed. The measure faces intense lobbying and extensive study before action.
State Senator Forrest Schwengels and State Representative Keith Dunton will meet with interested residents in Washington on Saturday February 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Chamber of Commerce office. They will first meet with the Chamber Legislative Committee chaired by Keith Vetter.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce announces its annual banquet on the 10th at K of C Hall beginning at 6 30 p m Tickets go on sale soon and are expected to attract wide local interest.
Washington County residents attended the Iowa Swine Producers Association convention in Sioux City on February 5. Delegates included Jim Ledger and family, Duane Miller and family, Cleo and Lorna McCoy, Terry Greiner, Keith Horn, Don Rich, Don Sheetz, Wilfred McCreedy, Joe Jones Jr. and Dave Wittetoe. Yoder Feeds of Kalona sponsored the contest. The county group earned multiple awards with Jim Ledger named Master Pork Producer and Duane Miller earning top district and state scrap-book honors. Lorna Mi in the Queen Pape coaene Washington County is mentioned in error.
