Cotter Couple Charged After Louisa County Raid
Police say a residence raid in Cotter led to seized substance believed to be marijuana. Donald Eugene McAfee and Kathy Jean McAfee face possession charges and were held for a court hearing. Sheriff Robert Wilke led the Louisa County officials and two highway patrol officers in the operation.

Train hits car near Columbus Junction at crossing
Wir and Mrs Toncie Martin of rural Columbus Junction were passengers in a car struck by a Milwaukee freight train at a crossing in Gladwin north of Columbus Junction at 8 30 a m. Sheriff officers from Wapello said Martin could not stop on the icy gravel road and turned his vehicle down the tracks so it was struck from behind by the train. The car was pushed several hundred feet down the track then shoved into a ditch. Mrs Martin was taken to University Hospital in Iowa City for treatment of undetermined injuries, but her husband was not hurt.

More fire calls in city during '74 in Washington
Fire Chief Lew McFadden reported to the City Council that the Washington Volunteer Fire Department answered a three year high of 64 calls in 1974, up from 49 in 1973 and 62 in 1972. Man hours rose to 1640 with rural fires up to 25 and city fires at 39. Four false alarms and 13 vehicle fires were noted. arson fires occurred as well.

Anamosa guard charged after inmate escape murder charges filed
Ronald Brewer, an escaped Iowa Men's Reformatory inmate, faces two open murder counts in the slayings of Clarence and Patricia Edwards. A reformatory guard, Hervert Pennock, is charged with allowing an escape and perjury tied to Brewer's escape. Bond set at 5000 dollars. Pennock to appear March 5. Brewer, once described as a model prisoner, was serving a life sentence for second degree murder.
