Independence reports 166 Buchanan county residents received pensions with 12 cancellations. Cancellations due to deaths four, habitual drunkenness one, improper transfers one, placed in county home two, per jury on residence two, ability of children to support one, leaving the state without permission one.
Fairfield city council announced a potential referendum to confirm the park commission action in issuing $6500 in bonds for the Chautauqua park purchase. The legal step would be taken if required to proceed with the vote.
Ottumwa notes the Burlington bus line opens a plush depot in the former national bank building. The unit, opened last Saturday, is touted as among the most luxurious in the Burlington system and offers an inviting interior for passengers.

Examiners for the motor vehicle department will be in Washington for the fore noon of Wednesday February 19 to administer driver and chauffeur license tests. Yesterday fifteen men came to take the tests.

In Council Bluffs, Sam Maker a 74 year old man huddled by a bare fire in a Missouri river bank shanty refused relief and asked not to have his home molested. Neighbors provided coal while a relief investigator kept to the porch. Maker claimed ownership of the shanty and land with only a mattress blankets and a bare floor as furnishings.
A Journal report misinterpreted tax growth figures for Washington County. The total increase is 124,566 dollars with 38 percent attributed to the county and 62 percent to the state. County taxes rose 17.88 percent from the prior year while state taxes rose from 14,764 to 92,968.75 dollars.
A $65,000 blaze struck Grand River Iowa on December day as the town of under 600 residents faced snowbound conditions and no water supply. Volunteers battled the flames for three hours in sub zero weather using snow and chemicals before bringing the fire under control.
