A column from Wapello recalls a crime by a ruthless thief who entered an elderly couple's home amid subzero temperatures and stole their coal. Roswell Stephens, 87, is blind and his wife, also 87, was left helpless after a summer fall that broke her hip.
The motor vehicle department announced 210 licenses revoked and 329 suspended in 1935. Driving while intoxicated was the chief cause, with 188 revocations and 82 suspensions tied to this reason.
Prof. C. C. Wylie of the University of Iowa astronomy department says no reputable scientist expects interplanetary rocket flights. He notes rockets would need speeds over seven miles per second to escape Earth and air friction would vaporize them.
Waterloo report notes Miss Marjorie Kennedy styled by William Krogh won the hair styling contest in Des Moines for the Iowa Cosmetologists convention. The design, called the cocktail curl, reflected the streamlined vogue in evening hairdressing.
Sixty five business men in work clothes with shovels help farmers open roads for school and rural carriers. Six crews operate in six directions from town as the work begins half a mile south of town. Men in corn bring hot coffee and sandwiches to workers at mid day breaks.
Mrs. Shuman of Marengo cannot have her broken leg set until warmer weather. She fell outside her home near Williamsburg after stepping out to check the temperature. A physician arrived 21 hours later after 35 men cleared a path through the drifted highway but could not set the leg, leaving her awaiting transport to a hospital when conditions improve.
I S A here will remodel its downtown offices starting about heb 20 it was announced by Manager Prank B Miller of Iowa Southern Utilities. Work will take about six weeks with the east room vacated and offices and display rooms moved to the west part of the building. The second floor will become model offices and the entire accounting department moved there. The stairway will be relocated, new lighting installed, and the basement altered for storage.
Iowa coal miners prepare for another Saturday of emergency work as representatives in Washington approve the plan for a nationwide coal shortage response. Seventeen counties report fuel shortages with towns already facing real suffering while shipments may arrive soon to Palo Alto Allamakee Muscatine and Lee.
Nine brood sows and sixteen small pigs burned in a fire that destroyed a hog house and corn crib on the Harry Maxwell farm three miles east of Washington. Loss valued around 550 dollars with insurance partial. Fire brigade from Washington county Farmers Mutual summoned after blaze began in the hog house.
G FE Mace chairman of the Washington county republican central committee issues a call for a county republican convention at the courthouse 11 o clock Friday February 21 to select nine delegates and nine alternates to the state convention at Des Moines February 28. The state convention will name delegates to the national convention at Cleveland. Voters in each precinct caucus at 8 p m Monday.
Bishop Frederick D. Leete of Omaha will occupy the pulpit Sunday morning at the Methodist church. His coming was confirmed by Dr. B F Schwartz after an auto accident delayed his earlier visit. Special music will accompany the service. Leete is well regarded by the congregation and a large turnout is expected.
Richard Leroy Sands, 14, died in Iron Mountain Michigan hospital from a kick by a horse at his parents home near VieWednesday evening. Funeral services set for Sunday at 2:30 pm at L A Jones funeral home Crawfordsville with Rev S F Wenger. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born Haskins Sept 10 1921, he had one sister Janet who died in infancy and was in his first year of high school in Dunbar Wisconsin.
Captain David A. Morris United States Army engineering officer will address the men’s Brotherhood at the Presbyterian church next Monday after a 6:30 dinner. He will discuss The Canalization Project on the Upper Mississippi with a large attendance expected and guests welcome.
A divorce suit was filed with the district court clerk today on behalf of Marguerite Skola Pierce of Kalona against J. B. Pierce, now of Minneapolis. The plaintiff seeks a divorce and restoration of her maiden name Marguerite Skola. Married December 29, 1934 in Minneapolis. separation followed. Attorneys: Wilson Clearman Brant of Iowa City.
A notice states that February 17 will name delegates and alternates to the county convention. The item specifies the action of selecting participants and the procedural timing for the local party or organizational meeting.
Des Moines reports Iowa total sales tax collections for the year ending June 30 1936 at 14 221 422 44 up from 11 331 810 71 last year. Treasurer Valentine cites 25 5 percent growth with holiday period gains and stronger quarterly results.
John W. Owen, 80, longtime Iowa resident and presbyterian church member, died this morning at his Brighton home after a long illness. He left a widow and four children from his two marriages along with two daughters from Brighton. A Sunday service will be held at his home at 1 PM followed by a 2 PM service at the Brighton First Presbyterian Church with interment in Brighton Cemetery. He was born Sept 1, 1855 near Troy, Ohio, lived in multiple Iowa towns, and spent years in the West and in Kansas and Colorado. He married Ida Speck in 1848 and Julie McClelland in 1893, with whom he had four children. He is remembered as a devout Christian and longtime church member.
All 250 students at Washington Junior High will perform The Magic Beanstalk an operetta in three acts set for Thursday evening February 13 at eight o'clock in the high school auditorium. Reserved seats cost 25 cents for adults and 15 cents for children under six. The production features a front-row chorus of 65 and a 20-piece junior high orchestra preluding the show.

An inter church committee will handle a special offering for the Washington A M E church. Pearl Parcell couple traveled to Iowa City on business.

Senator Charles McNary of Oregon to introduce an amendment limiting funds Secretary Wallace may spend under the administration's substitute for the AAA retirement of crop land and soil conservation program in Congress.
The House approved the conference report and sent the first deficiency bill to the White House. It appropriates 296 million dollars to permit payment of AAA benefits under existing contracts and moral agreements, enabling immediate payments on contracts active before judicial action halted the act.
The Iowa commission formed by Governor Herr proposes a government food storage program to use surplus harvests in times of scarcity. It envisions warehouses and subsistence stores and will be sent to Secretary Wallace as a supplement to the existing soil conservation plan.

NEW HAMPTON Catherine Nolan files in district court for $25 monthly old age pension from November 1934. She applied in 1934, received $15 in January, and a commission representative says paying $25 to all would drop half of current recipients.
About a year ago Mrs B E Stutsman planted a grape fruit seed in a small pot. The plant reached six inches in ten months and has grown at least three more inches since Christmas. Dr Stutsman says he promised the fruit to Julius Kunik who plans to advertise it as genuine home grown fruit.
