A column notes that 40 of the nation's oldest educational institutions have been assigned to Victory ships being built on the west coast. One ship at Permanente Metals Corp No. 2 yard in Richmond California will bear the name Grinnell College.
Clyde and Merton Lyons of Les Moines go on trial before District Judge Fred M. Hudson for assault with intent to murder. Howard Knight, a 68 year old farmer near Emmetsburg, said the men shot at him when he refused hunting permission on his property in October. The case, originally set for Jan 22, was delayed as the defendants appeared without counsel, lacking funds. W. J. Fisher was appointed to defend them.
Des Moines man Eaywared C. Adams a former Des Moines resident, 34, was found slain near Rison Arkansas. The undersheriff said Adams, a carpenter, was struck on the head with his own ax and likely died about two days earlier. He had left Des Moines two years ago to work in defense plants.
Services for Deloris Carman Donahue 15 a Shior high student who died Saturday will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart church here. Her death was attributed to spinal meningitis. She is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs Eugene J Donahue and four brothers.
Des Moines reports say Oflag 64 in Poland has moved to Stalag 3 A at Luchewalde near Berlin. Col Thomas Drake, former commander of the 168th Regiment Iowa National Guard, was a prisoner there and confirms the transfer. Capt Clyde HK Herring, son of former Sen Clyde Herring, is among Iowa prisoners since his capture July 17 1943 in the Battle of Faid Pass in Tunisia.
Iowa State College will end segregation of Navy V-12 and civilian students next Thursday if no new poliomyelitis symptoms appear. Navy officials announced Friday that the segregation was ordered after a V-12 student was diagnosed with infantile paralysis.
The Washington city council plans to buy a new fire truck to modernize equipment and maintain low insurance rates, pending War Production Board approval. The goal is 750 gallons per minute pumping, using funds from fire reserves and selling the older truck, with plans also for a new deep well and extensive paving after the war.
Hu ber D. Evans of Washington files for a decree of divorce from Lillian M. Evans. They married in Washington on Sept 1 1989 and lived there until Dec 12 1942 when he entered military service and remains in service though on 380 day furlough from overseas. George F Morrison is attorney for the plaintiff.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion will hold a regular meeting Tuesday at eight o'clock in city hall. Commander Jay Brewer announced three uniformed soldiers home on furlough Hubert Evans Jim Batterson and Ted Springman will attend. The meeting includes the usual cats and business program.
Relatives report the death of Frank L. Adams aged about 74, formerly of Washington county. Born in the county to Mr and Mrs John S Adams, he spent his early life there. His brother John Adams resides in Ainsworth. Survived by wife and two sons. Funeral services were held last Tuesday.
Winter union services sponsored by Washington churches opened at the Presbyterian Church with a large audience. Next Sunday the service will move to the Methodist Church with Dr. Walter Schueremann preaching. Dr. Lustwood spoke on patching as a metaphor for life, stressing home life and the need for a whole garment of character. Special music and solos enhanced the service.
Two tankers and a Liberty ship collided in New York harbor. By noon 12 dead, 20 missing, 80 injured. Survivors named Spring Hill, Bernard Carter, and Divi as involved vessels. Fire contained minutes after ignition. About 60 injured hospitalized.
Sheriff H M Putnam was seen on crutches after a fall earlier today. Local authorities reported he sustained injuries but continues to monitor his condition.
Soviet forces pushed into Germany from Breslau toward Frankfurt and Berlin, with bridgeheads west of the Oder up to 11 miles wide and 12 miles deep. Moscow said Zhukov and Konev struck along the Oder flank and a 30 mile distance to Berlin remained, despite boggy fields and stiff resistance. The push aimed to outflank the Oder defenses and threaten Berlin directly.
T L Dodds age 89 died at his Washington street home after five years of failing health. Funeral at L A Jones funeral home Wednesday with Dr F W Eastwood presiding. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by wife Eddie Espy Dodds two sons two daughters eight grandchildren two great grandchildren and a brother, W Dodds. One son Clarence preceded him in death.
Hospital X rays showed no broken bones but a torn ligament in the upper leg after slips on the ice. Several people suffered bad falls on the icy surface early yesterday.

Funeral services for Samuel Joseph McKee were held this afternoon at Sherman's funeral home with Rev. George Kerr officiating, burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He died Saturday at age 69 after a heart ailment, born January 23, 1876 in Prairie Flower northwest of Washington. He lived in several places, married Amy E Bickford in 1906, and survived by his wife and three sisters in Wisconsin Indiana and Ohio.
The 78th Army unit of the first army offensive front advanced about two and a half miles from the Kesternich area northeast of Monschau to capture Ruhrberg, driving through the open area between fortifications along the Siegfried line.
