Kay Stewart, 17, of Shenandoah and Northwestern University cheerleader, signs a five year contract with Paramount Pictures. Oskaloosa city council outlaws peening and eavesdropping with penalties up to 30 days in jail or a $100 fine.
Max Ingalls reported seeing a robin in the back yard of his home at 602 South Gilbert Street in Iowa City. The brief police notice notes the sighting from the residence location with no further details.
Anita: Miss Etta Johnson age 73 did not attend morning service at Anita Methodist church for first time in over 55 years she died early that morning in town.
Mrs Dean Darlington was granted a divorce from David B Darlington in district court. She testified he spent so much time on a soap box that he abandoned the family to make leftist speeches in middle western cities.
Scarlet fever has killed two members of the Peter Haag Jr. family in Whittemore. Five survivors remain seriously ill including Mrs Haag 32 and her son Robert. Doctor Harold is given little hope for recovery.
Paul Omara of Lake City reported that a trucker pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was fined pounds 100 with driving license suspended. Officials cited this as the first instance nearby of a private citizen exercising this privilege after Omara arrested him last week.
Mt Pleasant Memorial hospital reports the birth of triplets to Mr and Mrs Chauncey Wilmeth of Salem. The two girls and a boy together weigh 12 pounds. Mother and babies are doing very well. The Wilmeths, married nine years, have one previous marriage name Marie Williams.
Francis F Fuller 51 former regular army captain and World War I instructor died after a long illness in Knoxville Veterans Hospital. He was a standout law student and debater at the University of Jens, noted for a brilliant record in his studies and activities.
Clay County supervisors authorize a contract to provide medical services for the indigent population in 1937 at a total cost of $300 monthly. The sum, to be divided pro rata among physicians serving the poor, raises each monthly payment by $25 from 1936.
A bill to hold cities financially liable for all costs involving police and fire department employees in automobile accidents was introduced in the Iowa House by five representatives including B&B. WHicken looper of Cedar Rapids and Leroy Mercer of Iowa City are among the sponsors.
Northwestern Iowa sportsmen passed a resolution calling for the Iowa Fish and Game Department to be placed under a single administrator. The measure, to be presented to the legislature, seeks one person to oversee fish and game.
The local Y's Men's club plans an indoor circus at the SCA on February 18 and 19 to raise funds for YMCA activities. Vaudeville acts, athletic sideshows, and concessions will highlight the event, with committees led by General chairman Bob Lytle and others coordinating refresh ments, auctions, finance and publicity for the benefit.
Des Moines moved by George Wilson to end contest plans saying Kraschel won by 2,451 votes from over a million cast. He cited taxpayer costs and legislative delays as reasons to withdraw while not opposing Kraschel's victory. In Washington, Congress readies a national unemployment survey to craft a permanent relief policy after years of emergency measures.

E. J. Strickler 31 of Iowa City died when his truck collided with a car carrying University of Iowa football star Ozzie Simmons and five other players. Simmons regained consciousness later and was listed in serious condition. the accident also affected plans for a Harlem Globetrotters game scheduled for February 15.
Sealed bids to carry mail between the Washington postoffice and three railroad stations are due Feb 14. A vacancy exists after the death of Willie E. Lewis, who served three years. Bids go to the post office department in Washington. Applicants must provide a motor vehicle. Earl L. Busby fills the post temporarily.
The Ohio river flood crest pours into the Mississippi below Cairo testing 1,200 miles of levees. Army engineers report levees along the front holding and expect waters to reach the Gulf barring heavy rains. Memphis sees only a .4 foot rise in 24 hours.
Troop 1 113th Cavalry held its annual banquet at the Y M C A with speeches by Frank Miles of Des Moines Adjutant General Charles H Gra nd Major Ralph Lancaster and Major C J Lambert. Miles urged preparedness and warned pacifists while stressing the Naval Guard role in national defense.
President Harland Meads of the Washington county safety council invites all interested in highway safety to attend this evening at 7 30 in the Legion rooms at city hall. An interesting program will be presented and council officers will be elected.
GM attorney Roy Brownell said legal steps will seek arrest of United Auto Workers officials and sit-down strikers. The sheriff warned he would clear the plant if ordered. Gov. Murphy seeks settlement without arrests and talks continue on recognizing the UAW as the sole bargaining agency where strikes are ongoing.
Howard McCleery returned from Chicago with Mrs. McCleery who is shopping for spring merchandise. Nic McCleery also went to Chicago to be with his mother who will stay a few more days.
Henry G. Reyner age 92 died at 10 30 this morning at his daughter Mrs Julius Enslins home 608 East Matin Street where he had lived for sixteen years He was a Civil War veteran born January 19 1845 in Pleasant Grove Ohio Surviving are three children Fred K Reyner La Plata Missouri Berne Reyner San Diego California and Mrs Enslin A brother Willard of La Plata Also a widow Louise Jacobs died here twelve years ago Funeral plans awaiting word from a son in California Arrangements are with L A Jones funeral home
The Attorney General's Office issues an opinion stating county supervisors may revoke pensions for blind individuals and may grant or deny pensions. Another opinion says municipalities cannot lawfully appropriate general fund money for certain local expenditures.
Judge Frank Bechly set nine o'clock tomorrow morning for further proceedings in the murder case of William H. Jordan. The court heard that two sanity experts found Jordan not insane, with exams ordered by the defense. Jordan is jailed without bail for the fatal shooting of Mabel Sayre and Danty Goode two weeks prior. County Attorney Richard A. Stewart leads the state case.
Unemployment relief cases in Washington County for January totaled 126 families, down from 189 the previous year, as disclosed by Miss Helen Creswell head of the county welfare office. Fewer persons are on the WPA rolls. there are 87 relief cases of unemployables such as the sick, crippled and aged who rely on county support.
Ground floor room on the West side of the Square owned by Senator A. Claire Dewey is being remodeled for a grocery and meat store operated by the National Tea company under a lease. MK Davison, from Ch employe, leads a crew of six to eight Washington carpenters, masons and painters. Completion hoped in about a week, with Washington hires for management and staff and a front redesign featuring a green wall and yellow ceiling. The store is seen as a valuable addition to Washington's business district.
Mrs. Phil Cran of Columbus Junction attended the day here to pay dues to subdivisions of the Iowa League of Municipalities. The opinion says it is legal to pay dues to the league proper.
