Mr and Mrs Everett Smith visiting Florida went fishing. Mrs Smith landed a 127 pound yellowfin tuna, first fish she ever caught, the largest off Miami Beach in six years after an hour’s tussle.
The Des Moines Advertising Club urged support for a proposed bill by Joe Flynn of Decorah to stamp Iowa license plate numerals inside a painted corn car. Members said the plate would let Iowa motorists advertise the state nationwide.
Eagle Grove High School student body voted 308 to 116 to allow athletes in fee charged activities to compete without buying an activity ticket. The decision ends Eagle Grove's sit-down strike where wrestlers refused to compete to avoid purchasing books.
Dicky the 20 year old canary prized pet of Mrs Harry C Smith died at the Smith home in Iowa City. He was known as a great singer and habitually ate bread and cream for breakfast. He will be buried in the Smiths yard beside their previous pet dog who passed away two years ago.
Ralph Ferguson, born blind, earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa after seven years of college work. A Council Bluffs native, he completed grade and high school at the Vinton State School for the Blind and will practice law in Council Bluffs.
In Dallas Center farm scene Ralph Thornsberry found his employer Ralph J Barrett buried under twenty feet of shelled corn after he climbed the pyramid to shake corn into a sheller. Rescue after about twenty minutes revealed Barrett uninjured despite the near tragedy.
A new child welfare work unit will be established in Ottumwa to serve southeastern Iowa. Mrs Rose McClelland director of the Wapello County Welfare Service announced a welfare specialist will head the program financed by the federal government with county providing office space. A child psychologist will also be available.
Mrs. T. F. Hardin of Los Altos California continues a decade old effort by sending 12 to City Clerk Ivan Bradford to buy licenses for unlicensed dogs in Council Bluffs. The habit began after she intervened to save a dog about to be killed for lack of a license that would follow its master to school.

J Pierpont Morgan purchased the 800 pound calf carcass entered by J. P. Morgan Boys Town Boys at the International Livestock Show in Chicago. The calf dressed at 64 percent and sold for 133.01 dollars to the New York financier. Gerard and Melvin Gallagher were associated with the entry.
The Ohio River flood crest neared Cairo as gushing water under the seawall flooded blocks and a house. Levees were patrolled and sandbags used. WPA workers mourn 16 dead at New Madrid with 14 missing as engineer Col Hugo Reybold lowers his predicted crest to 51 feet from 55.
Funeral services for Jacob H. Spencer who died of a heart attack will be held Thursday at 10 30 at Jones funeral home. Rev FE J Shook will officiate. Burial is in Ainsworth cemetery. Spencer born September 24 1858 Canton Michigan. Survived by widow Anna Shoop and four sons Melvin Orville Blake Birlen.
A Rock Island line train No 814 derailed at Nira Station due to an ice covered switch point. The locomotive slid about 50 feet and halted near an embankment. The four cars included two freight cars a combination with two passengers and a caboose onboard.
Funeral services for William Dawson, Civil War veteran, were conducted yesterday at Sherman’s funeral home by Dr. F. W. Eastwood. Six grandsons served as pallbearers. Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton. Three of the five surviving Civil War veterans in the community attended, including Dr. J. C. Rolce, J. A. Embree, and Jesse Harvey, with the Women’s Relief Corps present.
In Willow Springs Missouri the body of Dr J C Davis was discovered in the Ozarks foothills. Federal agents arrested 20 year old Robert Kenyon after he led authorities to the remains. Davis had been shot twice in the head and three times near the heart and was found with a clutching a checkbook. The boy was seized at a farmer’s home near Grinnell and confessed after lengthy questioning.
About thirty members attended a Legion post meeting where safety topic filmstrips on highways were shown. Manton Hebner played accordion numbers and Howard Snyder recounted his life up to the Jordan shooting when he spoke with the killer to prevent violence. The commander and adjutant were chosen to attend a Des Moines officers meeting February 21 and 22.
Early this afternoon one of the psychiatrists’ reports on William A. H. Jordan was received while another was delayed. Judge Frank Bechly has Woods report from the Iowa City state hospital but Ristine’s Mt. Pleasant hospital report is not yet in. Attorneys expect the files to guide their next moves in the murder case of Mabel Sayre’s killer.
Wheel county reports 2301.74 raised for Red Cross flood relief with 211.06 received that morning including 150 from Wellman and 27 from Ainsworth. Chairman Roger Sherman expects totals near 2500 once late town contributions arrive and warns against unauthorized solicitations by youths.
Gibbs collapsed at the wheel on the way to work causing a collision with J. I. Merritt who was parked nearby. Police and medics responded to the crash scene to render aid and investigate the incident.
Washington County shows higher average old age assistance than Iowa's average in a Social Security Board report. In September last year Washington County paid an average of 14.22 dollars per recipient, while the state average was 14.54. Total expenditures reached 3,172 dollars for 261 recipients. Polk County had the lowest average at 15.29 dollars.
London dispatch reports that the average Englishman believes a European war is inevitable and Britain will be drawn in. It notes heavy spending on war weapons, the rise of air power, air squadrons forming, and shortages in air raid preparations as the nation braces for a potential global conflict.
Des Moines reports a debate over the cost of house roll calls with Rep. Ed Brown accusing excessive demands for roll calls and Rep. Charles Johnson countering that taxpayers pay for lengthy sessions. Brown defends the need to reduce minor roll calls.

Charles Edward Simmering, a Washington High freshman and French horn player in the school and municipal bands, died at Washington County Hospital after three weeks of illness started with influenza. Funeral services are set for 2:30 PM tomorrow at Jones Funeral Home with Elm Grove Cemetery burial. He was born August 22, 1922, to Mr and Mrs Edward E Simmering and survived by his parents and twin sisters Helen Irene and Hazel Lorene. grandparents Mr and Mrs John Simmering and Charles Kephart. a brother Howard John preceded in death in 1928.
The Allis Chalmers farming equipment show hosted by KE Phillips drew large crowds. Morning attendance around 1100 with five to six hundred seats filled in the State Theatre this afternoon. Morning program and lunch were at the Busby building south of the button factory.
Work on a large cofferdam near Clinton Illinois is set to begin this week. The dam No. 13 will span the Mississippi River from the existing locks north of Fulton to opposite River Front Park while workers clear timber at the site.

In Des Moines the house approved a bill by 94 to 6 to extend the mortgage moratorium through March 1, 1939 and grant relief to debtors who signed mortgages in 1934 and 1935. The Senate had earlier voted 47 to 1 to extend only for affected mortgages. The House adopted a 67 to 42 amendment for a new moratorium on 1934 and 1935 mortgages.
