Leonard Brown of Oskaloosa appeared in Justice Jake Seibert’s court for refusing to support his family and was jailed in lieu of $1,000 bond. Relief Director Richard Haines filed the charge stating Brown refused a job offered to him.
Twenty three members of Phi Delta Theta at the University of Iowa were released from an emergency quarantine. Fourteen members who were susceptible to scarlet fever were ordered to remain in the house. Two members are ill with the disease.
In Algona the Koosuth county jail suffers a burst furnace boiler. Sheriff Casey Loss reports four prisoners are kept warm by steady exercise while plumbers work in the basement to fix the problem.
Mrs Earl Hinkley of Lone Tree IA walked into the county auditor's office carrying a suitcase. She opened it to reveal a dead fox for which she received the standard $2 bounty.
Arnolds Park mourns Mrs. H. R. Henderson 80 one of the Spirit Lake stockade confinement children in the 1863 New Ulm massacre era dies of pneumonia. Husband and five children survive with funeral services upcoming in Arnolds Park.
Iowa Public Service Co. to build a one million dollar electric light plant at Waterloo with a 15000 horsepower generator. Repairs in northwest Iowa plants will cost an additional 500000, said George A. Neal of Sioux City vice president and general manager.
The Win Charger Corp of Sioux City could not collect on a payment check after it cleared to a Chicago clearing house snag. The Aurora Ind State Bank sits 16 feet under flood waters in the Ohio river area, delaying collection for merchandise shipped to an Indiana dealer.
United Air Lines announces immediate expansion of the Iowa City municipal airport hangar. The structure will be widened from 95 feet to 125 feet to accommodate the Air Queens aircraft entering regular service on the transcontinental run.
Burlington resident Carl Pryor will continue as lawn emergency relief director at a salary of 250 dollars per month. The position previously paid nothing, and Pryor, who served two years under former Governor Herring, had offered to resign.

Eleven Des Moines youths aged 14 to 17 were held as police investigated a juvenile joy ride theft ring. They confessed to stealing 50 automobiles in Des Moines since November, per detective inspector Jack Bro.
Lester B. Krabill elected president of Washington County Safety Council at the advisory council meeting held at the Legion club rooms. Deans Mead preceded as president. 225 members reported. One act comedy Sir David Wears a Crown presented at the high school with Miss Opal Keeney directing.
Sheriff Wolcott seeks state militia after General Motors won a court order to evict more than 1,000 sitdown strikers at the Fisher body plants in Flint. Strikers threaten defiance and say they are prepared to die if force is used. A telegraph to Governor Murphy asks for a closed military zone around Plant No 1 and a Detroit conference outcome.
Des Moines reports the Iowa House passed with 81 votes to 13 to extend mortgage moratorium relief to all mortgages issued in 1934 and 1935. The measure heads to a senate house conference after the Senate previously agreed only on a moratorium for loans made before 1934.

Mrs. Mary Alkire 72 of Brighton died at home at 5 a m after a Tuesday stroke. Maiden name Alemander born in Illinois. Survived by son Nate and daughter Iva of Des Moines. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm at home with Dr Whiting of Presbyterian church officiating. Burial in Brighton.
Des Moines, Feb 5. Governor Kraschel declared he supports in full the board of control's call for increased spending on Iowa insane institutions. The governor's endorsement follows the board's declaration urging additional state funds.
Krussell Frink state highway maintenance engineer in Washington learned of his brother Lyle E. Frink’s death at Oklahoma City. The 37 year old, unmarried, formerly of Hampton Iowa, lived near Washington most years and worked on farms and in town. Cremation planned in Davenport with burial in Hampton. He leaves one sister Mrs. George Robertson of Denver.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to enact sweeping reform of the federal judiciary to inject younger talent, speed up justice, and remove delays. The plan would allow 50 additional federal judges and raise Supreme Court membership to 15 from nine.
County Red Cross chair Roger Sherman reports Kalona contributed 480.16 to flood relief, plus earlier 25 and about 150 locally in two days. County total nears 2900 with expectation to exceed 3000. Donations left at Washington banks or with treasurer Miss Lucy Dempsey.
Alfred Brown owner of the Mid-Continent station on West Washington street was appointed this week by President Ted Brown of the U's Men's club as the group's representative on the advisory council of the Washington County Safety Council. The advisory council held their meeting last evening to select officers published elsewhere in this paper.
William H. Jordan was sentenced by Judge Frank Bechly at Fort Madison to life imprisonment for the murders of Mabel Sayre and Danny Goode. The verdict followed evidence on deliberation and premeditation, with counsel debate on whether death or life was proper.
