Hans Kloppenburg testified that he saw Isadore Fisch carry a packet into Hauptmann’s home the night before the Lindbergh baby ransom sailed for Germany. The defense argues the packet held what remained of the $50,000 ransom money from the Lindbergh case.
In Algona the first criminal case in years is set to begin Tuesday. Byroy Grove of West Bend faces a charge of taking part in an attempted torture robbery of Nick Thilges, a local farmer, who was struck with a revolver butt. Mrs Thilges appeared with a shotgun as the would be robber acted. The defendant pleads not guilty.
An Independence resident and his artist wife sparked interest with painted sparrows on their grounds. Officials investigated after birds of brilliant color appeared, revealing the artist had painted the sparrows the husband had captured as part of a nature hoax.
A bandit posing as a store clerk bound and gagged the regular clerk and robbed the Davenport chain grocery of 25 dollars Saturday afternoon before escaping.
William Rodemeyer of Waverly said he mailed counsel for Bruno Hauptmann and received a German report claiming a dying acquaintance confessed to kidnapping and killing the Lindbergh baby. The letter cites U.S. kidnaping news and says the killer acted over revenge after making noise.

Otto J. Dankwardt former Washington meat proprietor died at his Iowa City area home Saturday night aged 66. Services set for 7:30 Tuesday at Oathout Funeral Home Iowa City with Dr. Harry Henry of the Iowa City Methodist Church in charge. Burial in Iowa City. He lived in Washington twenty years in the meat business, retired 1928, survived by widow Abbie, three daughters Mabel Ralph Jones and Claire Gray and son Arthur L. in Washington DC. Four grandchildren and four sisters with three brothers in Burlington.
Charlie Hennon and his workers begin work Tuesday on a new front for the Lemmon jewelry store area. The front will include entrances to both the front and rear, with a north and south window. The south window will be shortened to provide hallway access and other improvements are planned.
A man named Ely, after recovering his breath, pulled a 22 caliber bullet from his vest pocket in the aftermath of a robbery. He was unharmed.
