American tanks and infantry literal ring the fortress town of Cassino as 6th Army units extend the Rome beachhead resisted heavy German counterattacks. French and American forces advance north of Cassino threatening the Nazi last holdout. German efforts to relieve Cassino are crushed.
A Des Moines column notes the deaths of Harold Riggs 37 Clinton a murder convict who died January 22 and Sterling Hart from Kenosha Wis an attempted bank robbery convict who died January 24 at Oakdale Tuberculosis Sanitarium. Riggs killed E J Stewart in Texas on October 6 1926 during a liquor dispute and both men were bootleggers. Riggs had been employed by Stewart and by others who robbed J J Burbridge president of the Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank of Manchester on November 21 1933, trapping him and his wife overnight.
Iowa dairymen can expect dairy feed subsidy payments of 5 cents per pound on butterfat and 25 cents per hundred pounds on milk through February 17. War Food Administration officials in Washington and Des Moines indicated continuation and possible rate increases through May 1, pending Congress action on the Commodity Credit Corp. extension.
The federal Power Commission denied the license to proceed with the Cedar River power project in Muscatine and Cedar counties Iowa. It suggests the permit dispute with the State executive council should be resolved in court before any review of the commission’s denial.

State supervisor reports no crop harvest shortfalls due to labor in 1943 44. Farms increased hogs eggs poultry corn soybeans milk flax with 70 000 smaller labor force. Community, schools and Extension Service credited for wartime self help and rural urban cooperation driving gains.
Since April 1894, Iowa has paid Hull a monthly pension for injuries from a 60 foot fall in 1891 at Anamosa prison. The pension rose from $20 to $30 per month by 1929 and Hull remained the sole such pensioner on the state rolls.

The U S Federal Power Commission rejected an application by the first Iowa Hydro-electric cooperative to erect a Cedar River power project citing lack of satisfactory evidence. The plan included a 300 foot dam across the Cedar River a reservoir about 11000 acres and a powerhouse with four turbo generating units totaling 70000 horsepower extending to the Mississippi River north of Muscatine Iowa offices are in Muscatine and Davenport.
Judge J G Patterson yesterday granted a decree of divorce to Martha V Bereiter of Brigh ton from Earl O Bereiter. The parties had agreed on a stipulation as to property rights and the plaintiff was granted custody of their minor child Charles Alan.

London reports more than 1,100 American bombers and fighters hit the German naval base Wilhelmshaven in the third major U S daylight assault within a week. Cairo radio says 5th Army troops have broken into Cassino streets and the fall of the Nazi held Italian stronghold is expected momentarily.
