Mr and Mrs Richard Stephens of Akron Ohio were hospital bound after a car they were driving to Raymond was stolen in Waterloo. The vehicle ran into a ditch struck a telephone pole and burned. Mrs Stephens 19 suffered a fractured leg and bruises while Mr Stephens 26 sustained severe head injuries.
Two inmates Bernard Sweet and Paul Smith disappeared from the Anamosa state reformatory farm. Sweet is described as 19 years old, 5 feet 6 inches, 140 pounds with blue eyes light brown hair and fair complexion. Smith is 22, 5 feet 6 inches, 130 pounds, brown eyes, light brown hair, fair complexion.
Des Moines Iowa received the largest 1943 supplemental lumber allotment for farm use among states. President Donald M Peaslee of Laurens reported total allotments reached 48 600 000 board feet due to Iowa being a major food producer. Iowa dealers absorbed their allotments early and this led to an additional 23 500 000 board feet for the first quarter of 1944 with the cooperation of the Iowa department of agriculture.
The county war price and rationing board announces Stamp 40 in War Ration Book Four is valid for 5 pounds of canning sugar from February 18, 1944 to February 28, 1945. This marks the first allotment set aside for the 1944 canning season.
Final witnesses were heard today in the case of Trustees of the Commercial Savings Bank seeking a decision on their claim against the C. O. Davis estate. Board members testified on rebuttal evidence for the plaintiff in the morning session.

Sam Yeoman longtime Washington resident perished when the railway freight car he used as a home burned this morning. Neighbors reported the blaze at about 8:25 and firemen could not save the structure. Coroner listed probable smoke suffocation. Yeoman’s body found in the car’s south end. Service planned for Saturday at L. A. Jones funeral home. Seven surviving children and several relatives from Iowa and Mississippi noted.
Senator Henry Lodge of Massachusetts resigns from the Senate to enlist in active military service. The move is announced from Washington with confirmation of his departure date and intent to serve.
The county tuberculosis association and health unit announce a school tuberculin testing program funded by Christmas seals. All high school students and all kindergarten and first grade pupils will be tested with pretest parental consent. Positive high school tests may receive chest X rays and younger positives trigger a family study.
