A column notes that residents defeated a proposition to transfer management of the municipal power plant, heating plant and water works from the city council to a board of trustees. The record shows the vote tally as No. 192, Yes, with the outcome described as a rejection.
Mattill, editor of Journal I and Journal II, has been appointed associate editor of the Journal of Nutrition. The four year term will be at the Oregon office of the American Institute of Nutrition, pending formal acceptance by A. Mattill, head of the biochemistry department at the State University of Iowa.
Iowa Secretary of State Karl G. Miller announced delinquency notices were sent to 29 corporations that failed to file annual reports due last July. Des Moines hosts 86 of the delinquents, while 6,627 filed on time and paid a $1 fee. Delinquents face a $20 penalty now, rising to $25 next month.
The wedding of 25 year old C. A Roberts to Mary Rivers, 46, in Tracy was postponed after the bride fell ill. Roberts blamed overindulgence the day before and a salon visit, saying her condition likely required return to Tracy.
Des Moines district notes an aged policyholder with a cash value of 462 must assign the life insurance to the state to remain on pension rolls. County Attorney Ralph C. Jones says the policy, taken out by the pensioner's son-in-law who paid the 32 annual premium for over 20 years, can be assigned without the payer's consent.
John Kirkpatrick, 74, Nichols, was taken to Mercy Hospital with several broken ribs a broken collarbone and possible internal injuries after an auto crash near Lone Tree. Harley Kirkpatrick 25 was also injured along with Keith Keller 28 in the collision caused by obstructed vision from a fence and grape vine on an embankment.
Polk district court jury assessed 4500 dollars in damages against Sheriff Charles F Keeling and charged deputies Fred Berg and Loren Forbes with false arrest of Eugene E Drake of Omaha Nebraska former Norwalk resident. Drake a track driver sued the sheriff deputies and bond sureties over a 1956 arrest in Omaha on a false check charge. Another man J O Drake was mistaken for him and arrested.
Des Moines lawyer Mark C. Reno, active in Democratic politics, has been named a special attorney in the criminal division of the U S justice department in Washington DC. Former Judge Hubert Utterback announced the appointment. Reno served as executive secretary to Utterback last summer during his illness and pursuit of federal patronage in Iowa.
Patty 20 and Maxene 22 Andrews sisters plan marriage amid disapproval from Orthodox Greek father Peter who is free on bond on a pistol without a permit charge. Police raided their New York City apartment after an anonymous tip alleges he waved a pistol to discourage music and marriage.
British Royal Air Force fighters shot down two and possibly three Heinkel bombers in a series of air battles off the northeast coast. German planes resumed attacks on shipping, dropping six bombs wide of targets as British aircraft engaged. The air ministry called the interception a success.
Des Moines reports investigation by agency heads into sharing relief client information across Iowa agencies. Current lack of a unified data interchange allows potential duplication of benefits and undisclosed cross-agency relief. Mr and Mrs Wayne Weaver from Lindsay California arrived this morning to spend several weeks with his parents Mr and Mrs Amos Weaver and with her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Klett at Harper Today they begin their stay with family in the area.
The 34th annual Journal carrier party honored James Bey proprietor of route No. 1 with a 30th gold watch for general excellence and salesmanship. Paul Peiffer received second prize a new $10 bill for route No. 9. Paul Dodder last year’s winner earned third prize a $4. William Houseal won a special $4 prize for best record on a route under a year. Thirty carriers and substitutes attended the event at the Elder home on Coppock highway.
At a special meeting the 1940 Big Days committee of the Chamber of Commerce decided on a city wide Dollar Day for Thursday February 15. The committee includes Clarence Logan as chairman Or E Schmitt Nic Mc Cleery W E Bond and Bill Shannon.
Elder house filled with carrier boys for a 6 15 broadcast of I Love a Mystery. After fruit cake ham loaf and beans the ice cream flowed as prizes were awarded for digests such as hungriest and noisiest carrier and fastest delivery. A diploma ceremony followed with a bouquet prize for greatest ladies man and later a theater outing to Destry Rides Again.
Walter Conner will devote his entire time to old age assistance in Washington county. Since October 1986 he has handled duties in both Washington and Louisa counties but will now work only in Washington. W. L. Ryan will serve as full time in Louisa. State welfare officials approved the shift to better manage growing caseloads and a state investigator will assist next week.

Four individuals passed the driving tests and received operator licenses from a state examiner. Edna Vanerus of Brighton, Mrs. Ray Gidley of Washington, Mrs. Samuel Gaston of Wayland, and Helen Pearson of Ainsworth were approved. Three failed. Chauffeurs licenses went to six people including Glen Healy of Moscow, Russell I. Beard of Wellman, A. Q. Christner of Mt. Pleasant, Jacob Van Diepen, Russell Griggs, and Duane C. Griggs of Washington. Three failed the chauffeur tests.
The Oregon township spelling contest at Hasking school yesterday afternoon crowned Charles Hininger in the lower division with a second place for Margaret Hininger and George Peters also placing. In the upper division Martha Hininger won, with Gladys Boyd and Donna Boyd following. Teachers listed include Amy Hemphill Madge Boyd and Grace Ferns.
Mr and Mrs Al Crone and Mr and Mrs Cloyece Crone who went to Rock Island yesterday were accompanied home by Mr and Mrs Douglas and family who will spend a few days there. Rev Carl W Klin is ch iemar Mire J pa ry of Kalona serves as secretary and Supervisor Frey Baner is the third member.
