After a public hearing marked by protests, Sidney town council approved steps to build a sewer system. The Work Projects Administration has given final approval and will supply labor for the project.
Webster City reports Dr Faye Lewis wife of Dr W B Lewis will publish a 806000 word memoir via MacMillan in New York. The work centers on a doctor's wife and an account of the doctor's practice. The title remains unannounced. The author is 80 and holds a medical degree.
Cedar Rapids police report shows January traffic accidents hitting a city high. During 31 days 194 crashes occurred, 24 more than any comparable period. one person died and 50 were injured. Property loss nears 370 0960.
In Belle Plaine sponsors debate timing and venue for the annual Farmers and Business Men's meeting. They face two options: hold at the usual time without beer or wait for warmer weather to meet at Firemen's Park with beer. The old National hall was sold for warehousing, leaving the high school gym as the only indoor venue but it bans beer.
In Mason City a new $31 000 Wesley Methodist church project is assured as residents of the south part raise $19 000 in a week campaign led by Rev. Paul A. Peterson. The $12 900 conference grant covers debt free dedication.
O L Swick 74 a lifelong Iowa resident and Des Moines resident for 24 years died at his home. Services will be held at Harbaugh Funeral Home at 2 p m Tuesday with burial in Glendale Cemetery. A native of Washington he lived in Oskaloosa and ran the country club there before moving to Des Moines where he was a keeper and manager of the Waveland golf course until retirement about ten years ago.
Marriage licenses granted to John N. Kurtz of Brighton and Mary Jane Brown of Washington and to George D. McChurchh of Washington and Geraldine Margaret Lintsz of Davenport.
Funeral services for Lewis Cason Dunbar 89 were held at 2 PM in the Brighton Methodist church with Rev. E B Hebner presiding. Burial followed in Hillcrest cemetery. Survived by three sons William Carl Bert. two daughters Mrs Anderson and Mrs Huston. two brothers and a sister. 28 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. Mrs Dunbar and one son preceded him in death. Born April 2 1850 in Colfax Indiana, he moved to the area with his parents and lived as a longtime community pioneer.
Mrs. Ella Glaze Hunter died at 5 30 a m Sunday at the Washington home she shared with Tennis W. Hunter. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m Tuesday at the Methodist Church with Dr R Clinton Keagy officiating. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Surviving are her husband and five children, with two grandchildren.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce will hold its February meeting Thursday at 6 30 pm in the YMCA community room. H L Dietrich of the state AAA committee will speak on The Stake of the Business Man in the Farm Program. Reservations for dinner are due by Wednesday.
Congressman Cassius C. Dowell of Des Moines dies in Washington after a long career, ending his 23 years in Congress. A special delegation will carry his body home, with Senator Guy M. Gillette to represent Iowa in the procession. Dowell, a six term veteran, had heart disease and was born February 29.
The House met for nine minutes in Washington D C on February 5 and adjourned after being advised of a death.
Dean Hunter is noted with surviving sister Mrs. Ed win KE Neal who lives in Keota Iowa. The death notice records two brothers and one sister as deceased.
Helsinki February 6 Finnish troops repulsed six Russian attacks between the Karelian isthmus and Salla northeast of Lake Ladoga. The official communique says 500 Russians killed and seven tanks four artillery pieces 30 autos and Arsenal captured. Russians attacked in snow and below zero weather and were repulsed on the isthmus and Ladoga islands. Today marks the fifth day of a likely decisive Moscow push.
A Lenten devotional service is scheduled at the Methodist church on Wednesday at noon and again at 2:30 pm. The 2:30 gathering features a review of the Sunday school lesson and devotional exercises aligned with the season.

The John DeFreese home burned yesterday morning around 7 30. The main portion of the two story house survived though the porch and wing were badly damaged. Insurance covered most household items with some losses due to smoke and water. The fire started on the back porch near an oil stove. The upstairs tenants Mr and Mrs Leo Kinsinger had their goods fully insured. The house sits one block east of the Wellman food store and features a 20 by 20 main section with a 16 by 16 wing and a back porch.
Acting Speaker Sam Rayburn appointed Representatives Fred Gilchrist Carl Le Compte Ben F Jensen and Williams Jacobsen all from Iowa to represent the house at the funeral.
Fred E. Hutt a 79 year old Washington resident died of pneumonia in Hot Springs Arkansas where he and his wife were visiting to escape winter He had been ill since last Wednesday Funeral arrangements are pending with L A Jones funeral home He was born September 19 1860 in Wurtemberg Germany and survived by Rosa Kurtz his wife four children and multiple relatives in Iowa and Illinois
Robert Joseph Boyd aged 35 died at three this morning after a long illness. He was born April 7 1964 in Washington county, a son of Pat Boyd and Deborah Tobin Boyd. Funeral services are set for nine Tuesday at St James Catholic Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. arrangements by L A Jones funeral home.
Fret E. Hutt of Washington died late yesterday at Hot Springs Arkansas where he had been for three and a half weeks. The caption notes the elderly couple’s golden wedding anniversary celebrated three years earlier with Mrs. Hutt in a related photo.
Centerville Iowa February report states John K Valentine United States attorney for southern Iowa district has not decided on seeking the democratic nomination for governor this year. He values the governorship but wishes to remain practicing law and will resign if he runs, with no expectation of reappointment regardless of election result.
Charles Boyd Sr. longtime Iowa City resident dies after a life in public service and music. He served as assetant clahier at a Haskins bank for four years and played with the Boyd orchestra. He married Alvira Greiner in 1925 in Washington. Survived by son Charles Boyd of Iowa City, his father Pat Boyd of Iowa City, brothers Paul George and Francis of Iowa City, sister Mrs. Robert Melien of Bloomington Ind, and was a member of St James Catholic church in Washington. He and his wife faced the loss of their daughter Mary Ellen years ago.
Ellis Walton 82 died Sunday night at Washington county hospital where he had been since Tuesday after a cerebral hemorrhage. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery Brighton. He was born December 20 1857 in Clay township son of Ellis and Elizabeth Walton. He married Sarah Kendall October 10 1883. He retired from farming two years ago and lived with his son Ray in Washington. Survived by son Ray of Washington and daughter Mrs Edgar Kessel of Miami Florida. Two sons Fred and Lawrence are deceased.
Joe Falk comes home this evening from Des Moines where he attended a two day convention of the Town Retail Clothiers association.
Rev. Patrick N. McDermott national chaplain of the American Legion will address the Washington county Legion meeting in Washington on the evening of Tuesday Feb. 13. He previously led St. James parish work in Washington and is well known locally.
Vice President John N. Garner and James A. Farley led the Democratic anti third term bloc as the national committee chose a site for the 1940 nominating convention. Philadelphia bid 125000 dollars, San Francisco pledged 250000, while Chicago and New York also contested the choice with Roosevelt’s allies backing Chicago.
Members of the Leon Beatty post of the American Legion hold their regular meeting Tuesday evening at 8 o clock in the hall room. Special entertainment is planned and the business session will discuss the county Legion meeting set for February 13.
Stewart school hosts a programs and open house Friday at 7 15 pm open to the public. Tickets cost 20 cents for adults and 10 cents for children with proceeds toward the PTA summer playground. The event features dramatizations music speech and exhibits including a new school orchestra and student showcases.
A couple honored Saturday night at Iowa State College engineers ball are Mary Ellen Wendel of Bronson named Engineers Lady and James Edwards of Cedar Falls knighted as St Pat. The blarney stone used in the ceremony had been stolen Friday by forestry students for a hoe down but was recovered in time for the ball.
