Eldon Wapello county officers sought the crews that raided Eldon High School at night. Thieves took a total of 75 dollars from the milk fund athletic fund and book fund, sparking a local investigation.
Sam Torkelson, 56, is in critical condition with internal injuries after a 1300 pound cow attacked him while he tried to milk her. The incident occurred in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the farmer's hospital says.
Col Norman Ramsey commandant of the Rock Island Arsenal Davenport said a week earlier theft of certain ammunition items was withheld to permit investigation. He minimized earlier reports, noting the loss would not exceed $35 in value.
Coroner Ralph W Lovelady of Fremont county reported W H Drake manager of the Malvern Trust and Savings bank in this town shot himself. His body was found in the basement by Bank Examiner D Emmert and Assistant Examiner Ben Metuen of Red Oak after bank books were started to be checked by state banking department in Des Moines.
GREENFIELD a search party found 35 year old farmer Fred Mathews hanging in the kitchen of an abandoned house near Orient. Mathews was a township AAA committeeman and Richland Consolidated school secretary and township assessor. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Irvin Mathews of Orient.
Frieda Zylstra 24 of Chicago is among five Americans reported overdue at Porto Alegre Brazil from Montevideo Uruguay aboard a vacation plane. Zylstra, a photographer and former Iowa House member, was on an aerial South American tour.
DEs MOINES C A Roberts 85 obtained a license at Polk county courthouse to wed Mary Rivers of Tracy. The bride to be claimed 46. They plan to live near Knoxville where Mrs Rivers owns a two acre fruit farm. Rivers has a daughter June 21 and another daughter Mrs Forest Kilborn in Tracy.
Des Moines reports Iowa communities offer talent for the All-American youth orchestra organized by Leopold Stokowski for a goodwill tour of South America this summer. The 109 member ensemble will be renewed annually with state representation, though Iowa auditions have not yet been set.
In Waterloo probate court Miss Mae Duffy of Oelwein accuses her brother Charles F. Duffey, trustee of their father's estate, of costing the estate over 500 dollars by not cooperating with the federal corn loan program. She says 3000 bushels of corn were sold at 29 cents when a 57 cent loan could have been obtained. The hearing also covers a 600 dollar commission charged to a real estate firm for selling a 300 acre Hamilton county farm at 33 thousand dollars to the sisters.
Hyde Park New York February 2 President Roosevelt warns congress that proposed 20 percent cuts in the agriculture budget will hurt efficiency of the farm program and harm individuals and economic groups He insists on no cuts below 900 million dollars for the next fiscal year beginning July next.

Brighton obituary for Mrs. Mary Friend aged over eighty who died at her son Dale Friend’s home in Peterson Iowa. She lived in Brighton most of her life with husband Mr Friend deceased years earlier, survived by Dale, Ruth of Peterson, Jack of Des Moines and a great grandchild. Mrs. Lucy Florence Crawford wife of James O Crawford died at 4 45 PM yesterday at the county hospital after two months of hospitalization. She was born Sept 19 1866 in Perry county and married to James O Crawford Feb 27 1890. Funeral 2 PM Saturday at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev William M Nichol. Burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survived by husband daughter Ann two sisters two brothers. One son and two siblings predeceased.
A jury acquitted John K. Walton of Iowa City on the charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The verdict was returned at 10:38 p m after a trial in district court that began on Monday and continued with arguments and jury instructions.
Mrs Anna Kupka Grayson wife of Edward W Grayson died at 10 40 last night at the Grayson home in Washington Iowa City hospital nine weeks prior to November first she was born August 8 1871 near Yatton and married Edward Grayson 48 years ago Surviving are her husband three children and two grandchildren Funeral services are set for two oclock Saturday at the Baptist church with burial in Wood lawn cemetery L A Jones funeral home in charge She belonged to the Baptist church Just Us club FOW club Women's Relief Corps American Legion Auxiliary and Fortnightly club.

Eva Ballard of Wayland died yesterday afternoon at 3 45. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 PM at Stacy funeral home with private rites. Rev BEJ Shook and Rev J J Pritchard of Victor will conduct the service and North Hill cemetery will be the burial place. Ballard, born March 3 1901 in Washington county was a Wayland high school graduate and longtime teacher at Wayland junior high. She is survived by her parents, a sister Mrs Nate Young, a brother Clarence, and a sister Bessie preceded in death.
Five people were injured and damage nears £200000 when Holbrook Furniture and an adjacent paint stores were destroyed in a major blaze. Fire Chief Richard Kelley and firefighters Paul Cook and Alvin Koranda suffered burns, with two others also reported burned. An explosion in the repair shop is believed to have started the fire. Coffee and gloves were provided to firefighters by local merchants.
A blaze in Davenport destroys the Holbrook Furniture company store in the heart of the business district. Firemen from Davenport, Rock Island, and Molise battle the four story blaze for forty five minutes. three firefighters are burned, and authorities estimate losses exceed 150000 dollars as neighboring structures are shielded from flames.
The Farmers' Mutual fire truck responded to Reed Moore's residence in Living Lake on Wednesday night near nine o'clock. Smoldering cobs in the basement filled the house with smoke but caused no damage. Firemen extinguished the smoldering cobs. cause unclear as the cap bin is distant from the furnace. John Custer drove the fire truck to the Cloyce Stewart farm address.
MAPLE RIVER Iowa Feb Fire gutted the St Francis parochial school a three story frame building forcing about 100 pupils to flee. Damage estimated at 30000 dollars. The blaze started on the third floor around 915 am. Carroll firefighters arrived too late to save the structure. Pupils exited in order. Maples River lies four miles northwest of Carroll in Carroll county.
In November 1938 Miss Ballard was noted as a member of the Methodist church in a local church remembrance.
