Des Moines Senator Harold Irwin introduces a bill requiring the State highway commission to obtain explicit approval from the local city council or board of supervisors before altering the route of any primary highway within or near a town.
Sen A Claire Dewey of Washington introduces a resolution in the Iowa senate expressing sympathy to the family of Prof Bohumil Schimek University of Iowa botany expert who died Saturday. The tribute calls him one of the most educated men in the Midwest.
Des Moines Republican Milton W. Strickler introduced a bill to permit judges to appoint one or two alternates on juries. If a regular juror is discharged or dies, a substitute could be drawn by lot. alternates would follow all jury rules and sit with the jury during trials.
In Valley Junction C. Ek Burris reports a large poplar in his yard split open from moisture in an old fault that froze. The cracking sounded like a double barreled shotgun and shook the house, a noise many residents have heard in recent days.
Shenandoah Partners reports that ice cracking under cattle causes a stampede as 85 head of steers flee across a farm, breaking a barbed wire fence and injuring several. The noise is described as sounding like an explosion and occurs as cattle walk over the ice.
Des Moines endures a spell of odd ice symptoms described by Prof. Paul S. Henrick. Streets and lawns are covered with ice, troughs and downspouts clogged, and ice mountains form on porches near house foundations.
Des Moines Vernon Blank, former secretary of the state Republican central committee and former secretary of the Iowa State Medical Association, is hired by Mayor Joe Allen as a lobbyist for the city administration. He will be paid $100 for work during the legislative session.
Hamburg Spoons, 54, of Hamburg, daily travels 100 miles to his Burlington crossing job in Council Bluffs. He leaves at 4 10 a m each morning including Sundays to ride 50 miles there, works 7 30 a m to 3 30 p m, then takes a 4 45 p m train home arriving at 6 p m.
Des Moines reports reveal two personnel changes in the office of Dr Thomas Curran new secretary of agriculture. J F Clancy of Des Moines will succeed A W Day as chief clerk and Marty Irwin of Melcher will replace E L Redfern as state chemist. Day and Redfern are Republicans.
Des Moines county report shows cash contributions totaling 29 975 80 for refugee aid in Ohio and Mississippi flood areas. An additional report from the state reformatory at Anamosa notes prisoners gave 25 in donations.
At the close of a school and discussion by the Wasangon county agricultural board held yesterday at the court house, Ed Hote was named chairman and Carl Oldfield as view chairman. Joe Knotek of Jackson Township joined the executive committee, with appointments by others. The committee will draft recommendations for county procedure, due in two to three weeks, and a second report to Washington, D. C. by March 15. Ten of fifteen townships were represented.
J B Spencer formerly of Ainsworth died of a heart attack at 2:30 this afternoon while ascending stairs to an office in the Jeffrey building on the square. The body was taken to the L A Jones funeral home.
Iowa legislators opened debate on a bill to bar married women from the payroll as two Democratic representatives introduced the measure and a Republican supported it. The move sparked immediate partisan contention in Des Moines.
Fire yesterday caused heavy damage at the Perry Davidson home on East Third Street. Firefighters battled the blaze that began in a chimney as water and smoke harmed walls and interior. Ralph Doureherty owns the property.
Early this afternoon the mails had not yet contained the reports from sanity experts who examined William H. Jordan the local slayer of two persons Jan 21. The district court clerk and both defense attorneys had not received the findings from Dr. A H Woods and Dr L P Ristine. It was expected reports would arrive tonight or tomorrow forenoon and be used to decide next steps in the Jordan case. The article also notes bills on married women and a state payroll probe.
The Washington county safety council advisory group votes on officers at its annual meeting in the American Legion club rooms at city hall Thursday at 7 30. Attendance is open to all interested, with a program including films on inertia and the other fellow and a report on proposed Iowa safety legislation by Mrs M L Brown.

Sheriff Wolcott announced enforcement as about 490 sit-downs faced removal from Chevrolet plant No. 4 amid a siege by National Guardsmen. Food entry to the plant was barred except for two Fisher body plants. Twelve were injured in a riot at Chevrolet plant No. 9 as police used tear gas and clubs against strikers attempting to block shifts.
Funds were left at Washington banks or given directly to Miss Lucy Dempsey, treasurer of the county Red Cross chapter.
Public contributions to the Ohio Mississippi Red Cross flood relief neared ten million dollars as Rear Admiral Cary T Grayson urged continued local fundraising. He noted past needs and cited the 1927 Mississippi valley floods where the Red Cross spent seventeen million despite fewer than six hundred sixty thousand people aided.
Fire destroyed furniture and severely damaged the Logan Reif residence in north Kalona with interior flames burning through walls and floors. The family woke to smoke from a barking dog and were rescued from the porch roof. The fire likely started in the furnace. the home belonged to the John Fisher estate and insurance status was uncertain.

Herring son of Senator Clyde L. Herring is listed as a legal counsel aide earning 1800 dollars. Garrett Roelofs executive director draws 4500 dollars, reporting to the temporary executive council. Charles Zylstra of Wawarden, ex-legislator, hired recently to interview applicants as duties expand. The executive council includes Kraschel O'Brien Wegman Storms Curran with no extra pay.
At New Madrid Missouri area relief efforts mount as seven bodies are recovered from icy waters after a barge disaster. About 31 WPA workers remain unaccounted for as flood levels rise and massive levee work continues along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.
