Relatives learn of the death of Ray Hammond, 41, son of Mrs. Ida Hammond. He drowned near Huntington Beach, California, where he worked for Standard Oil as an inspector. A police officer saw him heading toward the pier. his body surfaced nine days later.
Des Moines reports two counties Grundy and Kossuth have no WPA projects while Polk County tops with 45 operating projects employing 4,993 people. Woodbury is second with 16 projects and Scott holds third with 13 projects.
Reading of the obituary for Oma Williams 24 of Salem shows she and John Melvin King were secretly married January 1 1937 and planned to establish a home together March 1, the couple having kept the union quiet until now.
The state highway commission heard Tuesday a committee led by O. C. Burroughs of Belle Plaine Jr. request to add a road from Ottumwa to Waterloo into the primary road system.
Muscatine banker and manufacturer C. R. Musser donated about $200,000 for a new Iowa State College cultural foundation. He deeded 1,750 acres across nine Iowa farms valued around $100,000, with an extra $100,000 in cash for operating expenses.
Senator Guy M. Gillette of Des Moines has filed for nomination papers at the Iowa secretary of state's office as he seeks the Democratic Party nomination for another term. He had previously announced plans to run again.
Villisca. Frank Gardner retired on a pension after about 40 years as a pumper for the Burlington railroad. He followed his father who served the Burlington for 31 years. The Gardners have pumped water from the Middle Nodaway river to the railway tanks for over 70 years.
Twenty members of Lambda Gamma Nu fraternity were placed under quarantine as doctors warned them to watch for smallpox symptoms. Ralph Isbell of Stockton, Illinois, was treated for smallpox at the Iowa State Teachers College hospital, confirming the illness.
Harry Adolph Budatz aged 43 died at a hospital Tuesday from an infection believed to have originated from a boil on his nose. He is survived by his wife and four children.
Tears filled the Marshall county courthouse on Tuesday as officials and others cried not for a trial but after Deputy F. H. Hart accidentally knocked four tear gas bombs from a shelf.
Iowa WPA Administrator George Keller said the state will cut WPA rolls by about 1 000 due to funds spent in the last four months of the fiscal year. He noted the rise of 4 000 to meet recession unemployment and projects a similar decrease for March through June.
I G Whitepost No 109 of the Grand Army of the Republic ceased its existence when Dr J C Boice last surviving member turned over the Civil War era flag to Leon Beatty post American Legion at a Boice home ceremony. Commander Preston Wolf and other Legion officers attended as the flag bearing 45 stars was transferred to the Legion promising to uphold its ideals.
Dr J C Rolce the sole surviving Civil War veteran from L G White post presented to Leon Beatty post American Legion the flag of the G A R organization he had donated years ago. The act signals the end of the G A R post in Washington.

Six men pleaded not guilty during arraignment before United States Commissioner John H. Hamilton in Des Moines on charges of violating the marijuana section of the federal narcotics act.

Two teams led by A W Kester and Harry Simpson finished tied after a two week drive for new members. Eighteen new members were counted, prompting Simpson and Easter to challenge the remaining 144 members to a new two week contest with a five dollar bet. Dr Tom McCabe praisedland Mead for safety work, and a four dollar collection was raised for infantile paralysis.
Des Moines police seized Don Martin, 21, for questioning as a seventh arrest in a Des Moines narcotics ring. Six others were announced yesterday and all are held for the federal grand jury, charged under a new marijuana law. Chief W. W. Akers of the state bureau of investigation calls the ring a major Iowa marijuana supplier.
John Hays fell on the fee en route to work and sustained a severely injured shoulder possibly broken. He is resting at his sister Mrs. Joby Davidson’s home.
Japanese forces captured Fengyang and Pengu about 100 miles northwest of Nanking after intensive bombing and artillery and air strikes. Hankow reports show the Peiping railway drive, aided by Chinese resistance, while reinforcements stream from Suchow to halt the invaders. Fears grow for American missionaries and other refugees as 80 Americans travel by refugee train from Hankow toward Hong Kong amid turmoil.
Robbers broke into Wapello High School last night and escaped with loot estimated between 59 and 65 dollars. Local police investigate the break in.
District court recessed at noon as jurors were selected for the Wilford Dawson turkey theft case. Dawson is charged with taking birds from Charles Vincent, with four other Washington men already serving terms for similar crimes. Witnesses include two reformatory inmates, Sam Gregory and Merle Dawson, brought from Anamosa for testimony. The Hutt injury case was placed before a jury earlier, and the Dawson jury was impaneled at 2 25 p m with County Attorney Richard Stewart presenting the opening statement.

Washington county is set for WPA road work with 11,442 dollars in federal funds approved by President Roosevelt. Projects will include clearing draining and maintenance, with state WPA director approval needed before start. Iowa reports 425 active WPA projects employing over 20 thousand, plus 369 more awaiting sponsor agreement. Washington county currently has three active projects employing 52 workers.
Mrs Eu nice Booth wife of Bernie Booth died at her Wellman home two miles west of Wellman yesterday afternoon after a long illness She will be buried in Wellman cemetery at a Thursday 2 pm service in the Wellman Methodist church Surviving are her husband a son Wayne a daughter Doris a brother Herbert Ash and sister Carrie Ash all of Iowa City One son Carl preceded her in death in 1933
A. E. Bridger, a longtime president of Union State Bank in Richland, died at 11:15 PM after a one day illness. He, 86, lived in the community most of his life and is survived by wife Ida Stroupe, two sons F B Bridger and Leo Bridger, two daughters Harriet Sidmore and Helen Bridger, and four grandchildren.
Lovell Lake, 21 years old, of Richland, is serving thirty days in the Washington county jail after pleading guilty to petty larceny. He admitted stealing an extra tire and a wheel from John Tener’s car in front of the Modern Appliance store on West Washington Street. Deputy Sheriff Stan Kiesey and City Marshal Jay Brown investigated and located one article in a Washington business house offered in trade for another car accessory.
Charles Hazelett announced that the presidents ball and gifts have brought in about 25 to 30 dollars for the national fund for infantile paralysis eradication in the community. Multiple groups and individuals contributed beyond the dance fund and additional donations are welcome to Hazelett or Postmaster M. C. DeLong at the post office.
