A Nashua column notes January set a new record with 40 couples marrying at the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Pastor William Kent officiated all but two ceremonies, compared with 18 weddings in January last year.
Raymond Kan, of Traer, died in a hospital here late Tuesday from internal injuries after a cog wheel flew from a corn shredder he was operating a few hours earlier.
Des Moines reports a new liquor control order banning half pint bottles to curb pocket bootlegging and sales to minors, aimed at stopping youths from possessing liquor. The policy targets common miniature bottles found on youngsters and reinforces age protections.
The state hospital for the insane at Cherokee holds seven discharged employees in doubt after Rev. T. M. Parle declined the arbiter post chosen by the state board and CIO officials. Superintendent Dr. C. F. Obermann says none were discharged for CIO activity but for inefficiency.
Edward William Theobald age 20 former Muscatine high school athlete died of a cerebral hemorrhage at 6 55 am at Bellevue hospital. He was the son of Mr and Mrs August Theobald of 1247 Halstead street after a nine day illness with a cold.
John Goodman, 56, a local hardware dealer, was found dead on a sidewalk in front of his Anamosa home. Investigators said he appeared to have slipped on the icy walk and suffered a fractured skull, with the body remaining frozen at the scene.
Cerro Gordo county officers continued an intensive search for George L. Ballantyne of Ventura Iowa who has been missing since last Thursday. Ballantyne was last seen with a large amount of cash on his person obtained from hog sales.
Des Moines Iowa officials estimate the Maytag estate will yield about 500000 in inheritance tax. The tax will go to the state general fund and mark the largest inheritance tax payment in Iowa history.

Dickinson County farmers received the first AAA benefit checks under the 1987 soil conservation program. A. L. Beny, chairman of the county agricultural conservation committee, said the initial payments were received locally, with county applications totaling $107,981 cleared for payment in Des Moines.
James Robert Overman 19 of Keosauqua Ia burned to death when a mail order truck overturned in a ditch along Coleman road near Hillsboro Ia Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle caught fire and pinned him beneath it before help arrived.

Corning Iowa February 3 former Governor Dan W Turner withdrew from consideration for the seventh district Republican nomination for Congress. He said the reasons were entirely personal and would not be a candidate for the office.

Assistant State Entomologist George Decker says lack of snow cover and wet conditions threaten a poor breeding season if spring and summer remain wet. The state advanced testimony in the lowa case against Willford Dawson on turkey theft charges, with Sam Gregory as the first witness. Gregory admitted stealing turkeys from Charles Vincent and implicated Dawson, noting a car used in the raid on December 30, 1937. Earlier witnesses included Mrs. Gregory, Walter Williams, and Pollok Wallace.

Carpenters were busy today placing boards over the plate glass windows on the ground floor of the Jeffrey building which escaped a recent damaging fire. Finley of Mt. Pleasant who manages the property said insurance cancelled coverage on the glass and the work protects the windows.
In Des Moines plans were announced to reopen several WPA projects employing 188 men, with $78,288 in WPA funds and $64,793 in sponsor contributions. Projects include street surfacing in Inwood, road improvements in Jones county, sewage system work in Humboldt, conservation at Pine Lake, sanitation in Crawford and Wapello counties, and pier and fence construction at Camp Dodge. Reopened sites also cover sanitation in Washington and road maintenance yards in Linn, depending on sponsors and weather.

Resolutions called for insured loans repealing the undistributed profits tax opposing wage hour controls and banning union harassment among other points. Landon commented that the conference would not be regimented into flag waving and may attract attention to their ideas.
Mrs A R Norman died at about 87 at her Mediapolis home yesterday with funeral services planned there Friday. The Normans formerly lived in Washington where Mr Norman was a Burlington Railway section foreman. She leaves three sons Oscar and Alvin in Chicago and Albert of Milton Iowa. Frank O Bergquist of Chicago, a former Washington neighbor, ordered floral arrangements for the funeral.
In Audubon Iowa on February 3 Harvey Mitchell the alleged butter thief was released on $5000 bond. He had been seized in a string of cream product thefts totaling over $40000 and was slated to appear for trial. Mitchell was arrested in August 1936 on the same charge but skipped a $2000 bond.
