High Court Splits 5-4 On Washington Utility Tax
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Washington state’s tax on gross operating revenue of gas utilities unconstitutional in a 5-4 decision led by Justice Roberts. Justices Hughes, Brandeis, Cardozo, and Stone dissented. The case followed an appeal by Great Northern railway after the state supreme court’s ruling. The court also limited a farm credit ruling on using stock to pay loans and upheld transferring the Shipping Board to the Commerce Department under the economy act of 1938.

Northwestern Main Line Rail Repair Starts In March
Railroad labor will get a break in March when the North Western begins to replace 104 miles of rail on its main line between Cedar Rapids and Scranton. The project uses 112 pound steel rails. Reedbeda will be rebuilt as part of the work.

Bashful bandit robs Neufeld pharmacy for two dollars
A shy youth rushed into Davenport Neufeld pharmacy and threatened Miss Dorothea Neufeld with a gun demanding ten dollars. The proprietor’s daughter handed two one dollar bills after palm faced a muffled mask. She later joked she paid him with two ones instead of two fives.

Lewis Family Mourns As Fourth Young Relative Dies
Funeral services were held today for Willie Elroy Lewis 27 at I A Jones funeral home in Wellman. He died Saturday at the county hospital from complications after surgery. Rev A L Shuey of Mt Pleasant led the service and burial followed at Ainsworth cemetery. Surviving are his wife Olive Coon two parents Elwin and Nelle Lewis five siblings Everett Mrs Harold Disney Retha Ena Una and others. Predeceased were Bernard and Vida Fern Lewis. He was born August 20 1909 near Keota and lived in Wellman area most of his life working as a mail carrier between railway stations and Washington post office and was a member of Franklin Methodist church.

Veteran of Civil War Dies in Washington at 89
William J. Dawson aged 89, one of the last Civil War veterans in Washington, died Sunday night at his home 414 South Seventh avenue after a recent downturn following a stroke four years earlier. Funeral services set for 1:30 Tuesday at Sherman’s funeral home with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery Brighton. He was born May 2, 1847 in Indiana, joined Eighth Iowa Infantry in 1864, married Indiana Bennett in 1867, and lived on farms near Brighton before moving to Washington in 1926. Surviving are eight children, 25 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, two sisters, and multiple nieces and nephews.
