Keokuk February report notes General Fitzhugh Lee selecting Lt. J. McDill Morehead of Keokuk for a Cuba horseback tour with a guard. He will interview natives explore roads plan fortifications and map provinces as aide to Gen. Douglass. Moorhead, former Iowa National Guard member, started the mission.

Secretary of State authenticates a power of attorney for Isabelle Alberte and others of Leone County Iowa authorizing sale of lands in Italy. Alberte to travel to Milan to handle the sale then return. Ottumwa Democrat sold for 3000 to Brown brothers. Local notable moves and a high school photo burned and shown at a drug store.
Mrs Hughes Murder Trial Begins New Phase at Mason City
In Mason City Iowa February 1 the Mrs Hughes murder case moves into a new phase as the state closes its evidence. Exhibits including a stomach package receipt and a registered letter signed by Professor Haises were rejected. The state asserts its case while the defense presents mild opening remarks and lays groundwork for two weeks of rebuttal with anticipated further evidence.

Captain Sanghaletti arrived from down the river with a relic from the Paul Jones a book owned by Miss Florence Taggart with her name on the front. It records the Epsilon Sigma fraternity of St Marys school Knoxville Ills founded Oct 24 1896 including pledge and member list. A missing shipwreck recovery party also found a hat and cellar clues. the book will be sent to Mayor Taggart at Inclarapolis.

Boiler Blast at Kenebec Coal Works Crashes Engine Room
A large Kenebec Coal Company boiler exploded in Oskaloosa just before noon. The 24 by 4 foot boiler blew off its back end, 700 pounds, traveling about 500 yards and landing near H A Armstrong’s home. Four men were struck by debris but unharmed. Engineers and workers Wm Spewart Fred Drennan Dave Love and John Gillspie are named.
