In Masup City the Hughes murder trial nears a conclusion with the state arguing Ed Hughes died from strychnine on April 17. The defense opens its case amid testimony of limited direct conflict between Hughes and his wife. In Oskaloosa, a Sunday fire destroyed the Times building and threatened adjacent property, with investigators unsure of the fire’s origin and insurers listing totals for the plant and fixtures.
Jonas Garman 71 of Licens Pennsylvania, brother in law of Dr J A Wirt Des Moines pastor, last seen December 27 after leaving home for Harrisburg. He wired missing train, bought a ticket to St Louis, whereabouts unknown. Des Moines detectives notified. he was a respected Lutheran elder with possible mental imbalance.
A Chicago salesman for Nelson Morse and Co was robbed of 149 dollars in cash two checks and a gold watch in front of Fond du Lac Wisconsin's M E church. The thief followed him from the north but two suspects were arrested and released as alleged. Concurrent items note Cuba disbursement plans and Bloomington union reorganization with 400 workers. Milwaukee pioneer Alonzo Kane dies at 76.
Mrs. Walter Mann sues for divorce alleging marriage to gain her $2,000 inherited before their May nuptials. She claims he sought $50 soon after the ceremony to cover a board bill, then she left. Twenty children are reported drowned in an ice disaster at Warpuhnen Boirhein village near Koenigsburg East Prussia on January 31. Rescue and relief efforts were underway as officials assessed the tragedy and searched for survivors.
