In Sodus New York a mob attacked two black youths accused of torturing a white boy. The rope broke, they were chained to trees and beaten to near death before being left to freeze. A passing crowd of women later freed them. At Ann Arbor Debs denounced trusts and predicted a future cooperative system with popular control.
The Young er Bros of Des Moines have closed a deal with the Parry heirs for a ninety nine year lease on a quarter block in central Des Moines. F L Whitcomb of Chicago is listed among the heirs. Plans are under way for a five story department store.
In Charlies City Iowa on February 2 Willard Jennings wife and two young children drank a cupful of embalming fluid thinking it was water. They are in precarious condition after the fluid left by an undertaker was consumed.
Oshkosh Wisconsin February 2 Miss Jessie Louise Paine daughter of a wealthy resident announces on her wedding cards that she desires no presents. Miss Paine is to wed Edward J L Wickwire in a simple ceremony.
Clinton Indiana February 2 George Snowden a 50 year old miner was knocked from a railroad ridge over the Wa bash river by a train. He fell thirty feet to the ground and was fatally injured.
In Washington the Senate faced a near vote on expansion resolutions with a large Republican turnout. Time ran out before the session and Carter objected to immediate action, leaving the matter suspended. Rawlins of Utah argued the Philippines pose constitutional questions and warned against expansion lest labor costs shift and offices proliferate.
The house moved through about fifty of eighty eight pages of the river and harbor bill, authorizing about 12.5 million dollars in direct appropriations and up to 18 million more in contracts. Hepburn of Town opposed, citing Ohio allocations and Texas Cotton compress proposals, while Catchings defended the Mississippi levee system and disputed the veto critique.

Insurance Campbell announces a settlement with the London Liverpool and Globe Fire Insurance company over anti compact law violations and excessive risk writing. Suits had been filed last November.
