Freeman reshapes farm agencies with new consumer service
Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman announced creation of a consumer and marketing service within the department to oversee consumer, marketing, regulatory and food distribution functions. The restructuring includes moving research to cut over $5 million yearly and closing many small stations. He cited $1 billion in four-year savings from automation and productivity. The plan merges meat and poultry inspection under AMS, a move denounced as ill advised by the American Meat Institute. New Kiwanis officers and board members were installed in Washington.

A 2 year old girl Jane Fant alerted neighbor Mrs. Marlene Bitting after her mother Mrs. Robert Fant was locked in a bathroom from 10 a.m. The Crawfordsville area family had moved from Indiana to a farm near the Robert Huff place. After the girl phoned the operator and the real phone, Crawfordsville telephonists Hering and Johnson unlocked the door at about 2 p.m. The mother and children were unharmed and the door was fixed.
