A United Press International tally shows 30 traffic deaths and 38 total holiday deaths by 10 a.m. as the New Year’s 78 hour weekend begins. A multi fatal highway crash near Cordell Oklahoma and fatal fires in California and Dallas push the toll higher amid safety appeals and insurance warnings.
Maj Gen Edwin A Walker told about 3500 supporters in Jackson that the United Nations is immoral and Dag Hammarskjold was a Red Swede. He claimed the U.N. threatens American sovereignty and warned of a shift toward a worldwide super government.
Howard G. McBride 70 died December 28 1961 in Tampa Florida. His body tomorrow night will arrive for funeral services likely Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home in Washington. He lived at 627 East Main Street Washington born November 14 1891 at Ainsworth Iowa. He married Della Fetters January 10 1926 and was foreman of the Washington County shops before retirement for health. He operated a repair shop since retirement and was active in Methdist and several Masonic bodies. Survivors include his wife and two sisters Mrs Oscar Gardner Washington and Mrs Edith Barnett Cedar Rapids.
Des Moines based Iowa Taxpayers Association calls for overhauling how school budgets are estimated to make state aid effectively replace property taxes. Ray Edwards says underestimation of general and supplemental aid last year kept tax levels rising, despite a $6 million aid increase.
Raymond Deloss Garner, 31, of Ottumwa, was found riding the Burlington California Zephyr between the diesel engines late Friday night. In Fairfield Mayor's Court he said he stepped out for a drink and admitted carrying a bottle of vodka. He received a 14 day jail sentence.
Most Washington stores and offices will close Monday for the New Year holiday while a few stay open with holiday hours. The Evening Journal will publish at noon that day.
The names of 15 men have been submitted to Chamber of Commerce members as candidates for the board of directors for 1962 and 63. Six will be chosen for the coming term. Ballots are mailed today and must be returned to the Chamber of Commerce office by January 5. Candidates include Leo Beauchamp John Hedberg Claude Woods Robert Bates Les Coffman Paul Horak Bob Choate Charles Morris Leon Hillman Harold Jarvis Gene Grecian Ken Peters Harold Thomassen Pete Boshart and Walt Farrell Sr.
Esley Sproat of Grant Nebraska died December 2 leaving more than 300000 in his will to the United States. His unpainted boarded house had no utilities yet his trust provides 136000 in bonds and 960 acres of rich farmland plus farm equipment and two safety deposit box contents. The executor, attorney George Hastings, says Sproat was honest and rarely spoke to others.
Soviet ambassador Mik hail Menshikov said a Berlin crisis could end quickly if the West accepts two Germanies in a realistic approach. Known as Smiling Mike he predicted Khrushchev’s forecast of communism for future generations and planned to depart Washington for New York aboard the Queen Elizabeth.
In rural Madrid, Joseph Short, 17, was killed by a 22 caliber bullet during a rabbit hunt. Sheriff Evers said no charges will be filed against fellow hunters Jack Titus and Allen Lantz, both 17, with the incident deemed a carelessness accident by Polk County medical examiner Dr. Leo Laka.
A British naval task force including the aircraft carrier Centaur and escorts sailed from Mombasa as Britain boosts military alert in the Middle East. Troop airlift assets and jet squadrons were dispatched to undisclosed destinations amid fears of Iraqi Premier Kassim moving on Kuwait.
Dr Harrison Brown of the California Institute of Technology told a Sigma Xi Phi Beta Kappa gathering during the AAAS meeting in Denver that the United States must keep spending billions on arms until a general disarmament deal with inspections is reached. He warned that an all out nuclear war is inevitable if the arms race continues. The AAAS 128th meeting was concluding.
Mrs Allie Graham 76 died suddenly Friday at the Bert Helscher home in Sigourney where she had worked in recent months. Her home is in Kinross. Survived by son Rodney of Ames. Funeral arrangements by Powell Funeral Home of Keota with details not yet definite.

The first of two beef cow short course sessions for owners will meet at the Washington VFW Hall on Wednesday January 3 at 9 30 a m with registration and coffee. Enrollment remains open Wednesday morning. The program runs until 3 30 p m and includes talks by Bill Zmolek Ames extension specialist on reducing wintering costs and boosting returns. Robert DeBaca also of Ames discusses performance tests to improve herd quality. The Washington County Extension Service sponsors the event with a small enrollment fee.
President Kennedy plans a Palm Beach meeting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff next week to review the year's military posture and set 1962 prospects. The trip follows news on his father Joseph Kennedy’s improving condition after a stroke and includes aides detailing the 1962 legislative agenda. Meanwhile Adlai Stevenson warned the U N Security Council’s Goa inaction risks world peace as India invades Goa.
An 81 year old nursing home resident survived after receiving poisoned candy allegedly mailed by her former employer Ralph William Krauss. He was arrested in Evansville on a sealed federal indictment charging mailing the powder poison in July 1960 to Miss Emma Elizabeth Miller, who habitually started candy from the box corner.
State Rep Russell E. Eldred aged 50 died of a heart attack at his farm home south of Anamosa. Eldred was serving his fifth term as Jones County representative. He is survived by his wife Greta a son Eugene a daughter Mrs Lonnie Hinrichsen and a brother Galen. Funeral services were pending in Springville.
The Defense Department forms Joint Task Force Eight led by Maj. Gen. Alfred D. Starbird to study atmospheric nuclear tests if President Kennedy orders resumption. Deputies include Rear Adm. Lloyd M. Mustin and Brig. Gen. John S. Samuel. Kennedy and Macmillan agreed at Bermuda to prepare for tests while evaluating necessity.
Marilyn Van Derbur, Miss America 1958, filed for divorce from Parsons College football coach Gary Nady in Denver County Court. She seeks to restore her maiden name and will not pursue alimony or property settlement. The couple wed June 1 in St. John's Catholic Church, Fairfield Iowa, after meeting at Colorado University where Nady played end.
Paul M. Butler former Chairman of the Democratic Committee died at George Washington Hospital at 8 20 am after a heart attack He had been treated since December 5 for complications from several medical problems His wife and family were at the hospital at the time of his death.
