Three East Germans Escape To West Berlin At New Year

John Custer the Lebanon fire station driver after 29 years retires. John Green will take the driver role joining Loren Robertson on shifts as relief for now. No Trace Found Of Watsons Body In Iowa River
Authorities at the University of Iowa lab ruled out human flesh found during river dragging near Muscatine as part of the search for David Watson the 31 year old bread truck driver. Watson disappeared after his truck plunged through a guard rail into a 15 foot embankment and submerged. The search involved the 224th engineers Muscatine National Guard emergency volunteers relatives and Watsons young son.

Escape Injury as Train Strikes Truck at Crossing

Five Die On Iowa Roads In Holiday Toll Rise
Iowa reports five highway deaths during the long weekend lifting the 1961 total to 633, with one day left in the period. Victims include Jerome Colbert 31 a photographer for the Keokuk Daily Gate City killed when his car struck a pole, John J. Agnew Jr. 40 found drowned near Keosauqua, and a three life head on collision on U.S. 61 east of Muscatine that killed Rudolphus Knowles 68 his wife Bessie 67 and Glen Aten 64. Four year old Darla Kay Venard of Sioux City died after falling on basement stairs.

A headon collision on U.S. 61 about ten miles east of Muscatine left three dead. Aten, Davenport bound, passed another car and crashed with Knowles’s vehicle coming from the opposite direction. The mother of actress Betty Hutton, Mabel Hutton 61 born Mabel Lum Thornburg, died from smoke after a chair fire in her West Hollywood apartment. Fire investigators believe a cigarette started the blaze and she moved toward the outside before entering the living room. Betty Hutton, who is expecting, was in Encino when notified. her sister Marion Hutton Schoen and husband Peter Candoli reacted to the tragedy.
