Columner Praises Ration Board Action On Car Speed Charge

Iowa column notes Richard McMullen of Woodburn and Simpson College student approved Warren county rationing board revoking his gasoline ration book after a 25 mph speeding charge. He serves Methodist churches at Spring Hill and Middle River and says the penalty may deter others from trouble and law violations.

Fatal collision near Garner injures teen

Otto Christen ton, 46, of Blue Mars Minn, was killed instantly when his truck collided with a semi on icy Highway 69 nine miles north of Garner. His son La Verne, 16, was seriously injured as James Raimeny of Sherburn lost control and jackknifed. Hancock County Sheriff L M Brower reported the crash.

Iowa Draft Delinquents Named by Council Bluffs Board

Council Bluffs draft board certifies two men as draft delinquents for failing to inform the local board of address changes. Jack Desmond Strachan, 27, and Francis Bostwick Kennedy, 29, did not respond to questionnaires sent to their last known addresses. The post office reported no change of address. Certification may lead to prosecution by the U S district attorney under the selective service act.

Rescue by Sub II Saved Gen Giraud During North Africa Mission

Captain Jerauld Wright of the U S Navy commanded Rescue by Sub II in a night off the French coast. He evacuated Gen Henri Giraud and several French officers to Algiers on the day of the Allied occupation. The same submarine carried Lieut General Mack Clark and Dwight Eisenhower aide during a secret meeting west of Algiers. Wright also participated in that operation.

Stores Close on Friday New Year Observance in Washington

New Year’s Day will not be a general holiday for Washington businesses. Many stores will close all day on Friday, with clothing and dry goods shops observing the day. some food stores stay open or close. produce houses lumber yards and other businesses plan full holidays. Court offices public library and post office will have limited hours. Only stamp sales at the post office window 8 to 10 a.m. No mail deliveries.

President Virgil M. Hancher of the University of Iowa urges students to return for the second semester starting January 6. He says their continued education will keep their service valuable when called to the armed forces amid the current conflict.

Fire kills multiple in Empire Hotel blaze in Syracuse

In Syracuse New York a one million dollar fire destroyed the 97 year old Empire hotel and damaged adjoining stores. About one hundred people were inside when the blaze began shortly after midnight with several reported dead.

Former British Diplomat Nevile Henderson Dead at 60

Sir Nevile Henderson, former British ambassador to Germany, died in his sleep in London at age 60 after a period of illness. The 1937 Berlin envoy had earlier served as minister to Paraguay and, on returning to Britain at the outbreak of war, published Failure of a Mission defending his tenure and critiquing Nazi policies.

State Veterinarian Reappointed in Des Moines

Dr. C. Frank Grimes was reappointed state veterinarian today by Secretary of Agriculture Harry Linn. The holdover has held the $38,300 position since October 1, 1941.

Benton County coroner said no inquest would be held into the death of John Fix, 77, a retired farmer, who was killed when his car collided with an eastbound Milwaukee streamliner at a crossing near Thore.

1943 Meat Output Forecast Reaches Record High

The Agriculture Department projects 1943 meat production near 20.5 billion pounds with poultry at 4.5 billion and pork beef veal mutton lamb totaling 25.8 billion. Civilians face rationing around February as military and lend lease needs trim production by about 6.5 billion pounds.

Kron Farm Land Three Tracts Sold In Estate Auction

In Columbus Junction on December 28, three tracts of Kron farm land were auctioned to settle Frank Kron estate. Twenty acres timber pasture sold for 60 per acre, sixty acres unimproved land brought 90 per acre, and one hundred twenty acres rolling occupied by Albert Kron sold at 57.50 per acre. Auctioneers were Paul Klotz and William Bruty, with district court approval noted. Cows, yearling steers, sows, hay, and corn were sold earlier at Ida Kron farm five miles south of Riverside.

County Supervisor Harve Wilson has learned of the death of his brother D y Wilson age 71 at his Winnett Montana home on December 24 Funeral services were held Sunday He was a son of Capt W A Wilson and wife He spent early life in Washington moved to Kansas and Oklahoma before Montana twenty years ago He homesteaded a Montana farm and served as county clerk at Winnett One of his sons is now county treasurer He leaves his wife and three daughters He is survived by two other brothers Frank in Winnett and Bert in Washington state
