Des Moines Iowa grocers were urged to keep lists of customers who attempt to buy unreasonable quantities of rationed goods. The suggestion came from Frank Zeh secretary of the Iowa Retail Grocers and Meat Dealers Association who said the records could aid future government crackdowns.
Iowa farm prices rose to the Dec 15 high since 1919 driven by gains in grain eggs and poultry. Leslie M Carl notes the index reached 179 percent of 1909 14 base, 33 points above last year and the best December level in 25 years. Hog and cattle price dips kept further gains in check.
Two Des Moines brothers Clement Overton 13 and Clifford Overton 11 were fatally injured when their sled was struck by a beer delivery truck driven by Carl FE Parkapile 19. Parkapile said he could not see the sled in time to stop. The boys rode the sled belly-buster style, and one truck wheel appeared to pass over them.
Federal employees in Des Moines shift from a 44 to a 48 hour work week. The Internal Revenue Service office will stay open until 5 p.m. on Saturdays and will remain open on New Year’s Day. The change marks the first bureau to report the schedule adjustment.
Mrs. Nick G Kal lainoff about 40 Plainfield Ia was killed and her husband about 50 died in a Charles City hospital three hours after their car collided with a southbound Jefferson Lines bus en route from Mason City to Waterloo. Passengers said the car skidded on the icy pavement and the bus driver could not avoid the collision.
James M. Whitney aged 49 a fraternity house caretaker was given a prison term not to exceed 30 years after pleading guilty to assault with intent to murder He was arrested November 9 following an alleged attack on his wife Maud Whitney 45 who was stabbed 11 times as the cook at the fraternity house
Urgent appeal issued by Red Cross surgical dressings committee at Washington city hall seeks more volunteers amid a large quota. Mrs. R A Frink says the work is patriotic and essential for the army, with shifts Monday Thursday evenings and Tuesday Friday afternoons. Volunteers may call or appear at the city hall work room.
Most residents greet the new year in bed or at home with quiet plans. The State theater offers a midnight show as hundreds attend. New Year services are limited but a community prayer service is set at the Y at 3 PM and the United Presbyterians host a noon New Year’s dinner at the church.
Senator Elmer Thomas says efforts will mobilize major farm organizations in January to back a three point plan for Congress. Goals include retaining farm labor, freeing service members for farming, ensuring raw materials for machinery, and revising parity to raise farmer income. Palmar outlined a USDA style disposal plan with tin cans placed in containers at the alley or street front. Cans will be hauled to the old tile factory dump on the town southwest edge leased by the city. Entry is via a gate east of Woodlawn cemetery. Any resident may dump non inflammable material in the clay excavation to be filled.
