Roving U S Ambassador W Averell Harriman flew to Warsaw by presidential plane in a surprise move linked to American efforts to end the fighting in Vietnam. He was there for talks with Chinese ambassador Wang Kuo Chuan, with 17 aides including Chinese interpreters, and was accompanied by State Department China expert David Dean.

Troop Move to Pleiku and Vietnam War Updates
U S airlifted elements of the 25th Infantry Division from Hawaii to Pleiku in the Central Highlands to counter North Vietnamese infiltration. Mine explosion kills nine at Dutch Creek coal mine
Nine miners died in an underground methane gas blast at the Dutch Creek coal mine near Redstone Colorado. Eight bodies were recovered by noon EST with one still missing. Governor Love called it a great tragedy as rescue teams worked to clear carbon monoxide and recover victims.

Swine Producers seek state swine disease fund donations
Members of the Washington County Swine Producers Association met at the fairgrounds with Gene Wead presiding to back the Iowa Pork Producers Association campaign. The drive calls for cash equal to 50 market hogs from each county to aid swine disease research at Iowa State University Ames. County Extension Director James Frier reported $440 plus four pigs donated so far, and noted many counties have met their quotas. Donations can be by hog price at sale or by check to the county extension office and are tax deductible. All gifts are due by January 7, 1966.

Four killed in Iowa highway crashes in Tuesday tally
Traffic crashes claimed four lives in Iowa on Tuesday, raising the 1965 UPI highway death count to 779. Victims include William Lindgren, 67, Fort Dodge. Albert Shoup, 58, and Otto Berger, 60, South Amana. and John Chappell, 44, Minneapolis. Lindgren died after his car left the road west of Armstrong and overturned. Shoup and Berger died when their pickup was struck by a Rock Island train at a rural crossing east of South Amana.

A former Columbus Junction resident, Lt. Commander Max Lukenbach, was a pilot in one of seven Navy planes shot down over North Vietnam last week. Relatives in Columbus Junction report he is listed missing in action. Lukenbach grew up locally and graduated from the high school. his father lives in Tucson, Arizona, and he has two cousins and a grandmother in town.
