Whiskey Taken From Sheriffs Must Be Returned
Justice of the Peace George J. Hatin ruled that four cases of whiskey seized during a raid at the Iowa sheriffs' convention should be returned to the owner Jack Steiner, a business agent for the sheriff's association. The liquor was seized December 3 from Steiner's hotel room. no appeal was filed, but a stipulation keeps return pending bootlegging charges. The grand jury did not act on the bootlegging charge, and officials said they will not appeal. Constable Basil Grossnickle seized the liquor and charged Steiner with bootlegging. Attorney General Robert L. Larson called the raid ill advised and said no law was broken.
