Allied Army Opens New Year in Korea With Counterattack

Allied forces began 1951 with renewed counterattacks against Communist positions on the western front in Korea. US and UN units pressed from dawn as battles for the height in no man’s land near Korangpo continued, with casualties reported as relatively light for the day. Temperatures remained frigid and fighting centered on hill positions near Panmunjo and the contested heights northwest of Seoul.

Des Moines Man Held on Wife Murder Charge

DES MOINES DES MOINES Walker 49 held in Polk County Jail without bond to await grand jury action on a murder charge in the shooting of his estranged wife Beatries at her mother in law's home in Oralabor. He waived a preliminary hearing and was bound over. The shooting followed a quarrel over her waitress work. Mrs Walker died en route to Broadlawns hospital.

The talks opened with subcommittee sessions at 4 p.m. local time as U N officials pressed for information on about 10 000 Allied captives and demanded a ban on constructing new air fields as a condition for any armistice.

Dan Murphy to Speak at Farm Bureau Dinner

Dan Murphy publicity director for the Iowa Farm Bureau will be the principal speaker at the Washington County Farm Bureau membership kickoff dinner. The event is Monday January 7 at 7 pm at the YMCA, with 175 of 180 volunteers expected to attend as kick off for a drive toward 1,426 member families, a county high. Captains including Leslie Bell and J F Litwiller will divide duties that evening. Washington County aims to surpass 1951 totals and help reach the 1952 county and state goals.

Services for Cpl Wayne Neiewanner Held Wednesday

Funeral services for Cpl Wayne Neiewanner will be held Wednesday at the Fairbanks funeral home in Muscatine with burial at Andalusia Illinois. The VFW will have charge of grave side services. He is the son of Dan Neiewanner of Columbus Junction and was killed in action in North Korea on September 13. He went overseas in January 1951 after training at Camp Atterbury Indiana. The body arrived in San Francisco December 15. Survivors include his father two brothers Pvt Tra Neiewanner of Camp Carson Arthur Neiewanner and four sisters Mabel Sophia Mrs Charles Harris and Mrs Walter Hargrave.

Search Continues for Crashes Involving 76 on Four Planes

United Press reports search planes over the Allegheny range, Arizona, and California for four missing aircraft with 76 aboard. One C-47 carrying 27 people went down in Arizona, including 19 West Point cadets. A second C-46 vanished from Pittsburgh to Buffalo, and a third craft unreported since Wednesday flew Spokane to Fairfield. Weather cleared after days of rain and 100 planes joined the hunt. An F-51 single seater is also missing between Phoenix and El Paso. A Florida beach sighting of a large two engine plane offshore could not be substantiated.

County treasurer WwW Kk Howell says 1952 personal and property taxes will be accepted starting Wednesday morning. County auditor Fred Bourgeois reports total 1 631957.46 in taxes of all kinds to be collected in 1952. Des Moines notes Iowa will see a record tax intake with 1851 special taxes at 174514 and 9 204757 above 1950. Seven special taxes set new records including gasoline tax motor vehicle fees and income tax.
