Pittsburgh based report states 650000 CIO United Steelworkers avoid a New Year strike while wage talks and a wage stabilization board study proceed. President Murray to meet January 2 with the wage policy committee to prepare recommendations for 2500 delegates.
Sam Simmering proprietor of the Washington Coast to Coast Store received a new 95 storm coat for being top salesman over a week in a ten week contest among 600 stores. His name enters a Jackpot contest for a grand Nash Rambler prize.
Funeral services for Grace Conger were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. E. L. Haney presiding. Pallbearers included Mervin Grosseup Daryl Grosseup Clayde Garrett Clarence Johnson Lloyd Conger and Ralph Moothart. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Adolph Kupka 73 died after a heart attack while driving home from Iowa City on a highway near Kalona. He died instantly after stepping from his truck to adjust chains. Funeral set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Kalona Methodist Church with burial at Richmond Protestant Cemetery. He was born 1875 near Riverside and lived in the Kalona area. survivors include four sisters and two sisters in Kalona.
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill has proposed discussions with President Truman on atomic energy Britain's economic plight the cold war strategy and allied defense plans for the forthcoming White House talks. He seeks review of Atlantic naval command east-west relations and British steel military needs with emphasis on atomic energy and armed forces roles.
Seven fines have been paid recently in the court of Mayor W B Dupuis for traffic violations. Fines were paid by P Edward Dusenbery Julius Kunik for speeding Edsall Brown Stewart Crone and William Zager for improper parking and James C Wilson Paul Goodwin for failure to observe stop signs.
Washington post office will adopt new hours effective January 1 as announced by postmaster O. J. Brown. Parcel and stamp windows will close at 5 30 p m daily, stamp window at noon on Saturdays, lobby closes at 5 p m, and last mail pickup around 7 45 p m with in square boxes closing at 5 30 p m. Sundays and holidays lobby hours remain 6 a m to 6 p m. Brown noted Christmas mailing rush continues and a large shipment of packages arrived, delayed by snow in Chicago area.
Jim Hamilton aged 67 was found in subzero weather near his one room home in Emmetsburg. He regained consciousness but remained in serious condition as hospital staff noted frostbite on hands feet ears and nose and an initially undetectable body temperature.
The agriculture department sues six grain storage dealers for mismanagement of government surpluses. Two new dealers join four named earlier, including C. M. Henderson of Farwell Texas and Spellman Feed and Grain Co. of Rochelle Illinois. More prosecutions expected as investigations continue into grain conversions and shortages from CCC stock.
Harold K. Stassen launched his second bid for the Republican presidential nomination saying he will stay in the race regardless of Eisenhower’s plans. He withdrew his earlier proposal to unite with Taft to push Eisenhower’s nomination and joined Taft and Earl Warren as contenders. Eisenhower backers anticipate his entry, while backers see Stassen as a dark horse who could benefit from a convention stalemate.

Bert Cray, Riverside auctioneer, has 41 years in selling lightning rods and cables starting in 1908. Four American airmen held by Hungarian Communists for a 120000 ransom were released at the Austrian border. Rev and Mrs O H Moll host missionary life in Brazil visitor Rev Lebenbauer and his family from Marceling Ramos Brazil during Christmas vacation. Lebenbauer has spent ten years serving the Lutheran church Missouri Synod in Brazil and plans to return February 7. Mrs Moll previously traveled to Argentina in 1940 to join Rev Moll.
John Ke. Cottman is held in Washington county jail in lieu of bond after being bound over to district court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He waived preliminary hearing before H. M. Putnam, justice of the peace. He was arrested by the sheriff's office.
City policemen report five dogs are available at the city pound for adoption. Three of the dogs are described as nice pups suitable as pets.
John Stephen Hough of route two Keota drove into a ditch on a county road east of West Chester. A transport truck traveling opposite detected his trouble steering and swerved to avoid collision, leaving Hough's car in the ditch.
The Red Steele Orchestra played for the first in the current VFW dance club series held Thursday night courtesy of the Musicians Union of America. Music will again be supplied by the Musicians Union on New Year's Eve from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the VFW hall.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nellie Sutten will be held Tuesday afternoon January 1 at 2 PM at Sherman's funeral home. Rev Karl Longfellow will officiate. Burial will follow in Wood lawn cemetery.

Funeral services for Clarence V. Erwin were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 4 30 in a Christian church with Rev T C Polk presiding. Sherman's funeral home arranged the service and Forrest Walker sang as soloist. Burial took place in Panther Creek cemetery near Redfield Iowa.
Washington firemen were called this morning to the Mace Motor Co garage where fire had broken out in a truck. Little damage was done.
Plymouth Vermont reports the Vermont Historic Sites Commission restoring Wilder House the site where Calvin Cook Wise took the presidential oath by lamplight shortly after Warren G. Harding died The feature ties the house to a key moment in U.S. political history and to Wilder House heritage.
