Iowa's ninety seventh birthday anniversary went unobserved in the state Tuesday. Iowans in southern California held a banquet and those at the Great Lakes naval training station hosted a party at Waukegan Illinois. Iowa became the twenty ninth state on December 28 1846.
A 68 year old Council Bluffs man Jes A Bright was killed in a highway 75 crash near Underwood. The vehicle driven by Vincent Adams 42 collided head on with an empty stock truck driven by Don Olsen 30 Manilla. Olsen and Adams were not seriously injured.
Ottumwa reporter notes William J Miller, 74, of Floris, died in a local hospital Tuesday from injuries suffered after a fall from a coal trailer the previous day. He formerly lived in Ottumwa and is survived by daughter Blanche Medlow of McCallsbore, IA, and son Glen Miller.
Dale Young, 49, of Braddyville, pled guilty before District Judge Harold E. Davidson to obtaining money under false pretenses. He admitted seeking $300 from the Iowa Finance Co of Shenandoah by listing as security farm animals not in his possession. Young was sentenced Tuesday to seven years at Fort Madison penitentiary after his Omaha arrest.
The social security board approved a federal grant of 208 667 dollars to Iowa to match state funds for care of dependent children for the period January 1 to March 31, 1944. The total program allocation covers the specified three months.
The War Department joined Newton residents in saluting the Maytag Co on its 50th anniversary and wartime production. Lieut. Col. Char W. Kerwood, a veteran of WWI and WWII, delivered official commendations from Assistant Secretary of War Robert Patterson and General Henry H. Arnold.

Aviation cadet Ilre Lang of Berwyn Illinois, age 22, parachuted to safety near Fremont on Monday and was unharmed. Officials described the incident as a routine emergency drill turned safe landing.

Canada is officially estimated to produce 17 million bushels of flaxseed in the last year, about 10 million more than 1941. From this crop, over 300 thousand pounds of linseed oil will be derived.
Washington officer Second Lieutenant Earl J. Richardson is awarded the Air Medal for five bomber missions over occupied Europe. In Washington on December 29, three hold-out unions informed the War Department they will avoid any action imperiling the war effort and will cancel the strike order. Secretary Henry L. Stimson announced the pledge after a 50 minute meeting with Lt Gen Brehon Somervell. The unions had threatened a strike that led to federal seizure of railroads, but with 18 hours to the 6 am deadline they rescinded their call as the army prepared to operate rail lines if needed.
At the county ministerial association meeting held at the Y Rev H W Munster of West Chester led devotionals and urged ministers to observe New Year’s Day as a day of prayer seeking God’s guidance for the nation’s heavy responsibilities.
