Iowa Veterinarian Dies In Car Wreck

Nelson, a veterinarian from Isexa, Iowa, was killed late Sunday night when his auto overturned two miles east of Shenandoah. Heavy fog caused the accident as the car failed to negotiate a curve. Surviving are his wife, an interviewer with the U S Employment service, and a son in Washington D C.

Drowned Woman Anna Topinka Found in Cedar River

In Cedar Rapids the body of Anna Topinka, 66, was recovered from the Cedar River. She had been missing since Christmas Eve and likely remained in the water since then. Detectives had tracked footprints from the shore on ice nearby during the search. Her family cited illness and despondency.

Married Man Sentenced for Child Stealing in Burlington

Burlington judge sentences J York, 42, to one year in Fort Madison penitentiary after a jury found him guilty of child stealing. He eloped with 12 year old Doris Rowling, daughter of Mr and Mrs Merle Rowling, marrying her June 13 at Kahoka Missouri.

Boy of Seven Killed by Car in Madrid

Services will be held this morning in the Madrid Catholic church for Thomas Edward O'Deay of Madrid. He was fatally injured Christmas night after stepping from an auto and being struck by a car driven by Andrew Larson of Madrid. He died en route to a Des Moines hospital from a skull fracture broken legs and internal injuries.

Will Start Drilling for Oil Near Mount Ayr

C. E. McPherson of Wichita foreman for Williams and Copeland Co. with a Stanolind Oil Co. contract will begin drilling for oil on the Billy Turner farm near Mount Ayr within a few days.

The War Department states American prisoners of war in Germany, including about 40 percent aviators, are unlikely to face Nazi war guilt trials in reprisal for Kharkov and Russian actions. The study notes nearly 10,000 U.S. POWs in Germany with fewer than 100 from Iowa.

Former Resident Myrtle Rambo Dies on West Coast

Mrs. Minnie Chance of Washington learns of sister Myrtle Rambo of Olympia Washington death from a heart attack after a brief illness. Funeral and burial were held December 24 in Tenino. Born in Coppock, she left Washington County 35 years ago and is survived by three sons and siblings in Washington Des Moines and Missouri.

Destroyer Sunk At New Britain

Secretary of the Navy Knox announced a destroyer and a small coastal transport were sunk during Cape Gloucester landings on New Britain island amid a Japanese air attack. Helldiver pilot Stanley Wallace credited with two kills

Washington Bay aviation radioman 3e Stanley E. Wallace of Iowa is credited with shooting down two enemy planes during a Helldiver mission that fought past many Zeros. He enlisted in 1942, trained in radio and gunnery, and was last home in February while serving in the Pacific battle.
