Three Dates for Russia Celebrate Christmas

In Moscow many Soviets observe Christmas on January 7 or January 1, while December 25 holds little meaning. New Year dominates with Ded Moroz, festive lights, and gift exchanges as schools close January 1 to 10. A small Catholic minority and foreign residents still mark December 25 with church services and embassy dinners. Orthodox celebrations peak January 6 into January 7 with late-night services and renewed faith among older women despite state atheist stance.
