In Cordele Georgia authorities began exhuming three more relatives of Janie Lou Gibbs whose family deaths over two years included a husband and two of her sons and grandson. Gibbs already faces murder charges for the death of her last living son Ronnie from arsenic poisoning.
The State Department asserted no hostile intent toward Cambodia while stressing pursuit of Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces across borders must seek peaceful settlement. Cambodian leaders warned of resistance if U.S. forces enter, seeking regional support, as South Vietnam signaled readiness to chase retreating foes across Cambodia for defense.
In California the entry of former Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace into the June 4 presidential primary appears assured as the American Independent party needs about 66,058 registrants by January 2. Officials noted early registrar surveys show 51,206 for the third party, with 46 counties still to report. County registrars must certify by January 21. The Peace and Freedom party reported 44,000 registrations as of Tuesday.
Washington County Pork Producers Association launches a two week drive to enroll 200 members and fund a state national self help program with a voluntary five cent hog deduction. President Ray Whisler says aims cover 20 percent of hogs. fee set at 2 dollars per producer with 2 more from State Association in 1968.
Peking Radio says China reports its largest harvest in years, crediting Maoist thought. Economists estimate 187 to 190 million tons of grain, with weather cited as the main factor. US AEC reports Christmas Eve atomic test and Japan notes radiation fallout. John Wenmohs of the US Agriculture Department notes disruptions from the cultural revolution affecting yields.
A Thai Airways DC3 carrying 31 people including at least 12 Americans crashed on landing at Chengmai, 500 miles north of Bangkok. Three people died, including Alfred James Taylor of Baytown Texas, 31, an engineering firm employee in Bangkok. The pilot and co pilot also died. Several passengers were seriously injured, with none of the Americans critically ill. The nose section struck a plowed field before breaking in two as the rear section remained upright. Virginia Taylor and two sons suffered minor injuries.
University of Iowa officials said the Central Intelligence Agency has canceled a planned recruiting visit on campus in Iowa City. Helen Barnes said the CIA offered no reason for the cancellation and there is no information on protest plans. Previously, the campus saw protests against Marine Corps recruiters and Dow Chemical recruiters linked to napalm production.
An explosion at the Atlantic Research Co. plant in Hanover Massachusetts, a facility producing antipersonnel mines for Vietnam, prompted a police description of the incident as very serious. At least six ambulances were dispatched to the scene as responders worked at the plant about 35 miles south of Boston.
Two elite South Vietnamese battalions using M16 rifles trapped a Viet Cong battalion south of the DMZ in an eight hour battle, killing about 203 of the 400 enemy. U.S. Marines, aboard ships of the 7th Fleet, pressed the pursuit near Quant Tri as the Viet Cong fled south. The South Vietnamese suffered 15 dead and 35 wounded. two U.S. Army helicopters were shot down but all crew were rescued.
Cedar Falls high school classmates rally for John Delafield 18 after a November motorcycle crash near Fresno left him paralyzed from the chest down. They raised 1400 to fly him to Des Moines rehab and cover center costs, planning weekend visits and a benefit dance at the high school.
United Press International reports variable Cloudiness across Iowa tonight and Thursday with colder temperatures. Tonight lows range from zero to five above in the north and five to ten above in the south. Thursday highs reach into the 20s.
President Johnson plans a two day stay at the LBJ Ranch with Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol arriving January 7 and 8. The visit centers on State of the Union and budget preparation, while talks likely cover Middle East arms requests and peace proposals with Arab neighbors.
Two men died in a crash near Lucas Iowa Leonard Davis 56 Clifton Missouri and Gerald McKnight 41 rural Chariton were found in a car beneath a bridge on U S 34. Davis was identified today. McKnight had last reported to work a week earlier and a missing person report was filed for Christmas. The death toll for Iowa traffic in 1967 rose to 799 with freezing weather possibly affecting the scene.
