A break truck driven by David L. Watson 31 of Muscatine disappeared after plunging into the ice filled Iowa River near Hills Iowa. The vehicle was recovered with only its top visible about 20 feet below the bridge and authorities feared Watson drowned. Davenport Wonder Bread Co reported no word from him and listed him as missing.
New Washington city government will swear in Cloid Willits as mayor and three council members at noon Tuesday January 2. Incumbent Mayor L M Eicher will transfer duties after an 11 am council meeting. New councilmen are Wayne Davis at large Dale Fuhr fourth ward and Phil Kneen second ward. The ceremony occurs in city hall council chambers and should be brief.
Washington Jaycees announce a tree collection drive set for January 8. Members will gather discarded Christmas trees from street corners only, refusing to pick trees left in block centers or alley entrances to keep routes efficient.
Congressman Merwin Coad, facing marital changes and district remapping, acknowledges encouragement from Iowa voters to seek Congress in the new seventh district. The 1961 remap moved Boone County to the fifth district while Ben Jensen and Neal Smith seek re-election. Coad first won office in 1956 and has since remarried the former wife of his aide.
Washington County farmers will receive notices from the county ASC office about continuing corn sales from bin sites. Letters mailed now explain ASC offers No 3 corn or better at market prices in lots as small as 100 bushels, with loading at no cost, details at the county ASC office.
Word arrives of the death Wednesday of Frank Miles in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cookes and Weir Funeral Home. A former Washington resident, Miles was once employed by Orez and Spear on a local farm. Survivors include his widow and son Harold of Wisconsin. he is a cousin of Dave Mc Gaffey of Washington.
In Washington and Detroit and Philadelphia, State Department officials defend U.S. policy in the Congo, condemning Katanga backers. Assistant Secretary G. Mennen Williams accuses local extremists and mercenaries of driving Congo violence, while Deputy Secretary Carl T. Rowan links secession to foreign financial interests and a "safe little kingdom" to control.
Officers and board members of the Chicaqua Izaak Walton League chapter met Wednesday evening at the residence of president H. Stouse in Brighton. Attendees included Norman Schoonover Clare Griffin Francis Friese Kenneth Peters Harold Brock Myron Salladay Paul Rotenburger and Alfred Lemke. A tentative list of committee chairmen was discussed with final announcements to follow.
Katanga Justice Minister Valentin Ilunga was arrested by Swedish UN patrol in Elisabethville and later released after UN civilian officials intervened. UN officials said the incident was a misunderstanding and regrets were issued. Four Swedish soldiers were being negotiated for release as Katanga authorities reported seven Swedes taken.
Leo H. McConnell 57 a lifelong Richland area farmer was found dead in bed Thursday afternoon near Richland Iowa. Doctor E Slosbaker said death stemmed from diabetes. Funeral set for 1 30 p m Friday at Gould Funeral with burial in Richland Friends Cemetery. Survived by brother Harold and sisters Edith Williams Sigourney and Wilma Gabby Oaklawn.
The weather bureau reported 18 below zero at Waukon the coldest mark in Iowa as a frigid Canadian air mass grips the region. Forecasters warned of subzero lows across the state with daytime highs around 10 above and snow cover over a foot deep. Major highways are largely clear though patches of ice remain, with snow packing heavier in the eastern counties.
Washington area men are invited to meet at the local armory at 1 p.m Sunday for a fox hunt. The event is sponsored by the Izaak Walton League Chicago chapter and open to all interested persons.
Anyone over 16 is urged to contact Tom McSpadden at the Washington YMCA to register for a SCUBA class. If enough interest is shown, instruction will start after the first of the year with sessions on Monday nights. Participants should be reasonably good swimmers.

The Riverside contest awarded Ed F. Havel first prize of 25 dollars in the rural division, Robert Wieland second with 10 dollars, judged by Bob Pogge, Larry Wieland, and Cleo Gerot. The Robert Harper residence won 26 dollars for best town decorations, by Dennis, with Don Kirchner second for town. The Better Riverside Club plans to make the event annual.
Nehru told New Delhi news conference that the United States made 11th hour attempts to persuade Portugal to begin talks to halt India’s seizure of Goa. He said Portugal refused and that late vague messages from Lisbon hampered reversal efforts. He cited Soviet veto in the UN and defended India’s action as justified. He also noted US mediation efforts and India’s readiness to accept mediation. Later, UPI reports note steel companies aiding schools with steel framed mobile homes as low cost classroom space.
