Farmers to Meet in Washington for Farm Strike Support

In what appears to be the first effort to organize support for the current U S farm strike in Washington County, a meeting of American Agriculture has been called for Thursday night in the K C Hall in Washington. The meeting will start at 7 30 p m and all farmers and their wives interested in better farm prices are urged to attend.

Iowa ends 1977 license plates grace period March 14

Law enforcement across Iowa warn drivers that March 14 marks the final day to operate cars with 1977 plates without citation. Pro-rated plates are excluded. From April 30, drivers must display new stickers, which counties treasurers’ offices are selling now.

Registration deadline extended for snowmobiles in county

Snowmobilers and snowmobile owners may register their craft as late as January 3 without penalty. County recorder Maxine Smith notes the extension is due to December 31 falling on a Saturday followed by holidays, making January 3 the next business day at the recorder's office.

The Washington Volunteer Fire Department sponsors Pancake Day on Wednesday January 11. Tickets go on sale immediately through any fire department member. Leo Beauchamp, long time event chairman, again leads the effort.

Fire Destroys Five Shops Near Glitter Gulch in Las Vegas

Five small businesses were destroyed by a blaze near Glitter Gulch in downtown Las Vegas. The fire caused about 1 million dollars in damage and drew hundreds of spectators from nearby casinos as four single story buildings burned for four hours. One firefighter suffered minor burns when a roof collapsed. Flames once threatened Central Telephone Co offices and alarms at El Cortez Hotel triggered. Police set barriers to control about a thousand onlookers.

Lock and Dam 19 stay open for week to clear ice

Keokuk Iowa United Press International reports Lock and Dam 19 on the Mississippi River will remain open seven more days for barges stuck in ice jams. About 30 towboats push 117 barges toward the 1200 foot lock, which was to close today at 10 am. the new closing date is Jan 3 after a morning corps meeting in Rock Island. Col Daniel Lucan notes good progress amid thick ice as late harvest grain keeps barges upstream.

Snowstorm Closes Roads Across Northeastern States

Heavy snowdrifts two feet deep cripple upstate New York roads and close businesses while a blast of arctic air sends single digits to the east. Sault Ste. Marie posts a record 9.9 inches. Buffalo area reports 16 inches in spots and 7 inches at the airport. Arctic temperatures sweep south, with rain and mudslides in California and a Malibu crash tied to slick highways.

Former Iowa woman killed in California

Elizabeth Ann Heidt 20 and her son Shawn Michael Heidt 1 were found in Jamul near San Diego. Heidt faced murder and felony child abuse charges after her son died from brain damage and respiratory failure. Detectives probe possible link between the two deaths and consider a man she lived with when taking her son to hospital.

Amnesia Youth Recovers Memory On Christmas Eve

Lon McGinness, 18, missing since December 4 after a head injury by a robber, regained memory in Springfield Illinois. He had arrived under the name Jim Kirk and later recalled his real identity and life in Janesville Wisconsin, where he runs a miniature golf business with brothers. His family was contacted and he returned to Cedar Rapids Iowa for a reunion.
