CIO United Auto Workers at J I Case plant in Rock Island join a broader walkout with 650 workers striking for a general wage increase retroactive to April 28, 1944. Strikes also hit Rockford Illinois Racine Wisconsin and Burlington Iowa as the movement expands.
Three new divorce petitions were filed with the district court clerk. All couples married at Kahoka Missouri within six years and have children. In two suits the husband sues, in one the wife sues, with attorney L J Kehoe for the plaintiffs in all three.
At Texas City on December 27 a Swedish tanker Steavorg exploded while dumping gasoline at Pan-American dock. Eleven injured and seven or eight dead were reported in the engine room as rescue work paused to vent gas and prepare blow torches to cut through the ship’s hull.
Surrell Barton of Mediapolis woke to a disturbance in his chicken house. He fired at a fox with a rifle and flashlight, believing he hit it. The animal fled but the next day a neighbor found the fox dead in a pasture about 506 feet from the sighting spot.
The Moscow foreign ministers conference agreed to form a four power control council for Japan with equal authority and veto power for the United States Britain Russia and China. General Douglas MacArthur would remain supreme allied commander though some independent action might be possible. Full powers were to be clarified in tonight’s official announcement.
Mrs Mildred Choechola, 25, a soldier’s widow, was pinned in her automobile when struck at a crossing by a train and burned to death as rescuers were driven away by flames. Her father Peter Maracek, 62, was bruised and cut, and Dr Stanley Grundjek, 27, her escort, sustained serious injuries.
A mysterious blast shook Jerusalem and Tel Aviv on December 27. The fire started in police headquarters and caused fires in both cities, disrupting the Christmas peace in the Holy Land.
A Greyhound bus traveling north collided with a parked truck six miles south of Glencoe Iowa injuring twelve passengers severely. The incident occurred shortly before noon and involved victims transported to local facilities for treatment. Further details were not immediately available.

The Interstate Commerce Commission postponed indefinitely the January 1 implementation of the equalization order rounding to a 10 percent rise for class rates in the northeast and a 10 percent fall elsewhere except the far west. The rates have been on file with the commission for nearly a month amid prior postponements.
Funeral services were held in Detroit for ten year old Richard L Body grandson of Mr and Mrs M G Campbell Sr He was the son of Kay and Elizabeth Campbell Body and died Monday after a short illness with pneumonia following influenza The Body family visited the Campbell home last July and the boys made many friends in the neighborhood.
Rescue teams in Timesville Kentucky report progress within 2500 feet of the No 1 Straight Creek Coal mine explosion site. Fresh crews faced smoke and fire as they pushed through rock, water, and collapsed timber to reach 31 trapped miners.
The Washington county board of supervisors approves merging the county social welfare and welfare offices effective January 1. The new office will be in the courthouse basement with Mrs. Payne Marshall as director and staff including Mrs. Charles Hotle Winifred Gerdes and Mrs. John Richards. Esther Goodlander will transfer to the state welfare department in Des Moines.
A brief note states that the Oregon Short Line railroad does not enter Oregon, clarifying routes or jurisdiction for the railway line.
With three days left in the Victory Loan drive, Washington County races to meet its E bond quota. Banks report near full achievement as residents urged to buy larger bonds to push the county over the top and finish the war bond campaign with a perfect record.
Mary T. Nick 70 died after a long illness at the home of her sister Mrs J M Kelly 602 West Main Wellman Iowa. She had been in Mercy Hospital Iowa City a month and returned ten days ago. Born in Postville 1875 she lived on farms near Marengo and Wellman and resided at the Park hotel 25 years. Surviving sisters Mrs Kelly Mrs Frank J Steele and Mrs J F Irwin and brother Joe F Nick. Des Moines reports 21 counties added to the 66 already at Series E quotas. Pocahontas tops at 180 percent while the war finance committee targets the last ten counties, urging continued sales through December 31 to boost Iowa’s national quota standing.
Roger W. Babson predicts a 1946 with slower overall business decline, faster peacetime reconversion, larger inventories, and higher retail prices for manufactured goods though some food prices may fall. Farm output should rise with more corn wheat and cotton, and per capita consumption exceeding prewar 1935 levels.
Secretary of State James F. Byrnes said the United States Great Britain and Russia agreed to set up a commission on atomic energy. He described the meeting as very constructive with cordial relations and hinted that many problems were settled at the talks in Moscow.
President Truman spent the second full day of his Christmas holiday in Independence visiting the Independence Examiner staff before going to his Kansas City federal building office. He planned to depart by air for Washington tomorrow and prepare his union message to Congress and a radio address outlining his legislative program. He would confer with Secretary of State James F. Byrnes on the Moscow conference.
Orville Schulty of ten miles northwest of Washington in the Lexington community died this afternoon after a period of illness. He was a son of Charles Schulty of Washington. Funeral arrangements are with L. A. Jones funeral home. obituary to be printed tomorrow.
