Washington post office flooded with parcel mail from Christmas orders delayed by heavy traffic and late trains. Postmaster DeLong said mail arrived last night and this morning from nearby points and should be delivered today, though Christmas delivery was already past due to weather and volume.
In Pineville Kentucky an explosion trapped an undeterminable number of miners possibly between 30 and 50 in a deep drift mine owned by Kentucky Straight Creek Coal company. Operator W E Lewis said about 50 men were inside when the blast occurred and the cause was not yet known.
The Coppock school planned a Sunday afternoon program at the county home but canceled it due to unrest among pupils. The Journal was told last week it was actually the Wayland school. The Coppock teacher is Mrs. Clarence M. Benson of Ainsworth.
Mail including Christmas cards broke records for the period at the Washington post office, while parcel post mail matched or exceeded the average volume.
United Press reports 470 people died during the Christmas holiday period across the nation. Traffic deaths totaled 248 on icy roads while 222 died in other incidents including shootings and falls. California led with 71 total deaths, followed by Texas with 46, and Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and Missouri also high.
Overnight break in at Crabb Phillips 66 oil station in Kingsworth via basement window. Nothing reported stolen. incident logged at the sheriff's office this morning.
Marriage licenses were issued Monday at the courthouse to Dale A. Garret and Cora Barbara Widmer both of Washington and to Marion M. Ballard and Goldie M. Keller both of Washington.
United States naval court on Kwajalein sentenced two high ranking Japanese naval officers and nine co-defendants to death by hanging for the 1943 execution of 96 American civilians on Wake Island. Five others received prison terms of five years to life. Rear Admiral Sakai Bara, former Wake Island commander, and his executive officer stood at attention as the sentence was read. Before verdict, Sakai Bara demanded Americans who devised atomic bomb attacks be tried.
Ice coated wires and branches from a Christmas Eve sleet storm left Iowa Southern Utilities and Iowa Continental Telephone workers repairing outages. Crews labored through the night with extra help from other towns, as toll lines and bus schedules faced delays. Weather eased with sun and thaw, but some lines remained out and sidewalks stayed treacherous with ice.
Despondency over illness is believed to have driven Leeee Joseph Wilson Ervin, 44, freshman congressman from Sinsants, North Carolina, to take his life on Christmas Day using gas. Friends say he suffered from osteomyelitis and appeared unable to recover. Assistant Attorney General Theron Caudle found him in his home slumped in a chair with a pistol and razor blade.
County buyers have purchased 442,635 of the 487,000 E bond quota for the Victory Loan, 86 percent, with 64,366 still needed. Chairman G. K. Mace urges residents to invest by next Monday December 31 as Crawfordsville and West Chester banks report progress and more communities hope to meet the goal.
Washington county has four days to reach its KE bonds quota for the Victory Loan. The county needs $65,000 more to meet its share after recent purchases from county banks show a shortfall. Officials urge residents with funds to buy bonds now to avoid another failure.
Washington December 26 The coast guard, once part of the navy since 1941, will be moved from the treasury department to its peacetime position as a branch of the Treasury. The shift will be formally announced by President Truman.

J I Case workers strike in Rockford Racine and Burlington with about 4 500 participants across cities. Rock Island plant workers plan an all night meeting to decide on joining the walkout. Pickets are orderly and no violence is reported.
Snow and ice across the midwest and northeast ease as temperatures rise. The Chicago weather bureau notes diminishing snow and winds. record drifts from Marquette, Michigan and Park Falls, Wisconsin melt while ports and air travel recover.
Funeral services for Mrs Paul Jheson of Glendale California were held Sunday in Glendale. A long time Fairfield resident she visited here with Mr and Mrs W C McFadden of Washington. She died Thursday night in Glendale and is survived by her husband four children all in California a sister Mrs McFadden and two brothers.
Newsomer Carl Herzer becomes meat department manager at Benteco supermarket. He married Anita Pratt and has prior ties to the area. He served three years in the navy and was discharged November 16. He hails from Arcata California and enjoys sports. The Herzers reside with Maynard Brown at 742 East Main Street.
