Two Civil Service Factions Shape Iowa Plans

One side favors keeping only about 300 top state workers exempt while preserving direct hire fire authority for elected leaders. The opposing view, supported by the union, would extend protection to all state employees and tie job security to a civil service board.

Saint Malo: Walled City of France and Seafaring Hub
Saint-Malo, a granite island port in Brittany, became a bastion of the French navy. Louis XIV ordered all sailors and officers of his admiral’s fleet to be citizens of Saint-Malo, famed for mariners and buccaneers who reputedly captured over 1500 vessels in one war. The storied port also links to the tale of la Duchesse Anne who wed two French kings.
