Des Moines Governor Kraschel announced J A Concannon's appointment to the Keokuk Superior Court bench to succeed Judge W L McNamara who resigned after nearly 40 years on the bench. McNamara asked to be relieved of duties after long service and had been elected to ten four year terms.
Dumfries area farmer Henry Plumer, 69, a pioneer Pottawattamie county family member, was gored and trampled to death by an enraged bull on his Dumfries farm. His daughter-in-law, checking why he did not return from the barn, found him dead. The bull with blood on its horns was later found on the road nearby.
A Jasper county road maintainer was demolished and the engine of an eastbound Rock Island passenger train damaged in a crossing collision. The one man crew, Scott Smith of Kellogg, was at the crossing when the brake caught on a rail and section men nearby failed to flag the train.
Bound over to the grand jury on a charge of entering a bank with intent to rob Leo Mikesh of Ac kley held on 5000 dollars bond. He faced Justice of the Peace W P Miller for robbing the Kesley branch of the Iowa State Bank of Clarksville of 53 dollars. witnesses tied the getaway car to Mikesh. he denies guilt.
SIGOURNEY Don Grimes 26 foreman and owner of a rock quarry near Sigourney was fatally injured when his auto slipped on an icy street hit the curb struck a tree and bounced into another. The wreck required 20 minutes to reach Grimes who died en route to the hospital. He was the son of Dr. C O Grimes of Delta and was driving alone.
Sioux City Police Sergeant Joseph FE Young is credited by Police Safety Commissioner Harold N. Sturgeon for reducing vice in the city but cautioned there is more work ahead. Young announced the job done and then raided the Doghouse downtown, arresting a bartender and seizing liquor.
Governor Kraschel pardoned Wayne Wellman and Robert McIlroy of Ottumwa who had been paroled from the state reformatory less than a month earlier. In January 1935 they robbed the Farmers' Savings Bank at Leighton of 1640 dollars and were sentenced to life terms. The pardon restores full citizenship and freedom from parole regulations to help them establish themselves.
Des Moines WPA workers in 25 counties totaling 14,850 recipients will receive monthly salary checks before Christmas. Checks amount to 495,564 dollars, according to administrator George J. Keller.
Charred beams and four girders marked the Farley and Loetscher sash and door plant in Dubuque after a blaze virtually destroyed the mill. One fireman was overcome by smoke as the fire started when sawdust and shavings on a hopper machine exploded.

The Washington board of education awarded three contracts yesterday for the two new grade schools. Carson Plumbing won the Lincoln water main bid at 252 dollars, with Pier son & Pierson of Fairfield as runner up at 280. Louise Weston of Des Moines received the Stewart school electric fixtures bid at 541.51, with Furlong Electric and Modern Lighting following. L H Kurtz Co. of Des Moines took finish hardware for 1782.96, over O'Dea Hardware at 1975. A separate Stewart equipment bid remains to be let, and the Lincoln School general contract is pending complete plans. Architects Dougher Rich Woodburn represented the plans and PWX engineer J F Sproatt attended the letting.
The Good Fellow effort reports $198.53 collected with baskets delivered by John Dodd and Little Transfer. Journal office and Washington stores raised funds while several local groups and individuals donated, with notable support from the North Side cafe box and United Presbyterian church collection.
North Second avenue underpass crews on the Milwaukee and Rock Island lines take a Christmas break of Friday Saturday and Monday. Richard Hobl a license examiner for the state motor vehicle department reports 116 Washington county truck drivers renewed their licenses for 1939. Total renewals reach 328 with 157 drivers still unrenewed before year end. renewals before January 1 avoid exams, while after require a new test. Some applicants came from outside the county.
Governor elect George A. Wilson names Deputy Comptroller Fred Porter of Des Moines acting comptroller effective January 12 as newly elected officials take office. Porter, a Republican, has worked in state service since 1916 and earned a $4 000 salary as deputy to Comptroller C B Murtagh after 17 years in auditing.

Captain Ransom G Amlong of the quartermaster corps with home in Washington Iowa is selected as a student at the Army Industrial College for the 1939 1940 course. The designation honors him and he joins eight other officers chosen for detailed study to prepare mobilization of industrial forces within twenty four hours.
The Washington public library will be closed all day Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday.
