Marlene Jean Ber Bauey, 10 months old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Bauey of Shelby, died by smothering in her crib at the family farm southwest of here. She is survived by her parents and one brother.
Grace McIlraith Ellis of Marengo took third prize in Scribner's Magazine January essay contest on Life in the United States winning 250 dollars for her piece titled Big Broadcast of 1938.
Three residents of Iowa were injured in a two truck collision in Chicago. One truck sparked a fire that spread to a tavern causing about 2000 dollars in damage. Donald F. Roth 23 of Garnaville suffered facial burns. George Wirth 45 suffered burns to the waist. Oscar H. Ibsen 27 of Lost Nation sustained a skull fracture.
Mason City Judge Henry N Graven appoints Col Hanford MacNider former minister to Canada as guardian of his three minor sons Tom 12 Jack 11 and Angus 10. Guardian bond set at 615000 to protect and preserve the children's property.

President Roosevelt plans to nominate Senator James P. Pope of Idaho to chair the Tennessee Valley Authority. Pope, a staunch supporter, would replace Dr. Arthur K. Des Moines reports twins James and Joe McCarthy ages 21 questioned after a man was dragged nearly 300 feet under a car driven by the brothers. The vehicle owned by their mother, Mrs Don McCarthy, a police matron, was on duty when the incident occurred. Police noted marks showing the body traveled about 286 feet from the initial impact. The twins claim they did not see the man before the crash and only realized the incident when the car rolled as if with a flat tire.
A New Year's program at the Y's Men's club featured talks on 1939 politics business baseball and farming with speakers Ted Brown Richard M Cleery Lee Holland Harry Sizer Charles Rerdo Bill Shannon and Bob McFarlane taking turns. Dunham Morrison reported that 559 people were helped by the Good Fellows baskets funded by cash food and toys, with accounts balanced and the project closed successfully.
Farmers in Ericson Nebraska urge action against a wealthy hunter who uses an airplane to hunt coyotes.
