Holiday travel rush begins this Christmas week

United Press International reports a National Safety Council forecast that 550 to 650 people may die in traffic crashes during the three to four day Christmas period. Weather across the nation worsened driving with floods mudslides snow rain and icy roads. Patrols and safety measures were boosted to curb fatalities. President Johnson and the Kennedy family planned Christmas at their Texas and East Coast locations while Eisenhower stayed in Palm Desert. Churches and charities organized services and gift distributions. In Chicago the Anti Cruelty Society held a Christmas dinner and blanket party for poor draft horses. About 250 people facing drunk and disorderly charges would attend Chicago’s Monroe Street Court on Christmas Day with a Salvation Army turkey dinner to follow.

Rev C E Strong Dies in Des Moines

Rev. Claire E. Strong former pastor of Prairie Flower Baptist Church northwest of Washington died Sunday at Iowa Methodist Hospital Des Moines. He, 76, lived at 1311 Woodland Ave. He guided Prairie Flower about 25 years ago and served 25 years as a Baptist minister before retiring 17 years ago. Survivors include his widow two daughters Mrs. Marjorie Hebron of Seattle and Mrs. Carolyn Cordes of Guernsey a sister three brothers and 10 grandchildren. Funeral held today in Des Moines.
