Oregon rivers flood 1200 homes near Portland

The Columbia and Willamette rivers sent major flood crests toward the Portland area forcing about 1,200 residents to evacuate overnight. Authorities ordered a low land strip cleared, warning of possible dike breaches as floods rose over flood stage by roughly 12 feet. Despite slow turnout, relief centers opened for affected residents while Gov. Hatfield urged cleanup guidance as floods receded in most areas.

Record Christmas travel toll tops prior three day mark

United Press International reports a record Christmas weekend death toll on icy and foggy highways nationwide. The National Safety Council cites 23 fatalities in Michigan and high totals in New York Texas Ohio Georgia Pennsylvania and California among the 8:30 a.m. EST tallies, warning the pace could exceed the 1955 three day record of 609 deaths.

Berlin wall opens for holiday trips to East Berlin

UPI reports thousands of West Berliners queued before dawn to visit relatives in East Berlin as Communists opened six narrow passages through the Berlin wall. About 85,000 entered East Berlin on Friday with more expected today and another crowd seen for New Year’s Day.

Brighton Man Frank Chuck Dies at 73

Brighton resident Frank Chuck 73 died at 12 45 am today Dec 26 1964 at Washington County Hospital after a monthlong illness. A funeral will be Monday at 10 am in St Josephs Catholic Church East Pleasant Plain with burial in the parish cemetery. Rosary will be Sunday at 7 30 pm at Gould Funeral Home Brighton. Chuck born Chicago Oct 4 1891 was a lifelong Iowa carpenter married Nov 12 1918 to Minnie Mosinski. He is survived by his widow three sons Edward Mason City Norbert Brighton and Frank Jr Venezuela two daughters Mrs Clarissa Mottet Richland and Mrs Catherine Dickinson Brighton and 14 grandchildren.

Mrs. Brown 93 Dies in LaCrosse Wisconsin

Mrs Margaret Brown aged 93 died Christmas Eve in LaCrosse Wisconsin. Her son Ted Brown of Washington will attend the funeral with Fred Beye of Washington. She had broken her hip in November and is survived by a daughter in Indiana.

Seven drownings in Georgia family tragedy

In Cumming Georgia a station wagon carrying seven children and relatives slid into a rain swollen creek after a hunting trip for apples. Seven drowned including five children while a 3 year old survived. Authorities cited wet roads slick tires and speeding as factors.

Record Iowa Christmas traffic toll hits new high

Tornado Hits Georgia Towns Killing Two In Trailers

A violent Georgia tornado killed two men in house trailers near Macon and injured more than a dozen others. It then struck Milledgeville, shattering windows, lifting a roof, and causing extensive damage. Weather officials reported winds over 100 mph as more storms swept the region.

Buddhists blame government after Saigon attack on center

Buddhist leaders in Saigon blamed the government for the Christmas night assault on the national Buddhist center and signaled a possible truce with Prime Minister Tran Van Huong. The communique described anti government violence and cited an 18 year old barber as a captured suspect while noting a prior three attacks in five days amid heightened security in South Vietnam.
