William H. Bare a 63 year old busline agent and filling station operator in Pleasantville was found slain in his station around 6 30 p m Wednesday. He had defended receipts in his two car drawers and was killed by a blow to the head and a shot to the heart after a groan was heard on the station line.
Earl M. Ingalls, 22, of Iowa City, pleaded innocent to larceny before District Judge Harold D. Evans. Police said he confessed to taking batteries inner tubes oil and a file from the Montgomery Ward store where he worked.
Arthur Voelliger of Voelliger Bros service station told Police Chief Herman Gliese that someone pumped all but 29 gallons from a 6560 gallon underground tank. A neighbor heard a splashing sound. A similar 450 gallon loss was reported at a Moline Illinois station last week.
Dr. J. M. Donelan 84 longtime Glenwood physician and son of the town’s first mayor died at his home Thursday. The community of about 4,001 loses its remaining local doctor with Dr. D. W. Hartman ill in Council Bluffs. Nearest doctors are in Silver City 12 miles away and Council Bluffs 18 miles distant.
DES MOINES Roger Bartlett, 16, died at Broadlawns General Hospital from a fractured skull after a Sunday crash that killed 14 year old Victor Young. Guy Stevens, 15, of 1218 Park Ave., remained critically injured but slightly improved Thursday.
President and Mrs Roosevelt spend Christmas at Hyde Park estate. Roosevelt to deliver a national and armed forces address this afternoon after finishing touches on the speech. Family and visitors mingle with aides and secret service as preparations continue for the broadcast.

George Findley Baird 77 died suddenly at 10:30 last night at his farm northeast of Ainsworth after a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Ainsworth Methodist Church, with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. He was born October 15, 1866 east of Crawfordsville and lived on the family farm 75 years. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church and married Cora Lord in 1908. survived by his wife, daughter Florence of Waterloo, Iowa, one brother Sr. J Baird, and sister Mrs. Emma Rice. three sisters preceded him. In a Vatican radio broadcast Pope Pius XII said the global war grows more savage with no quick end. He denounced materialism and godless science, urged victory over a harsh peace, and called on the faithful to prepare for reconstruction in Christ’s name.
Rev Fr L Stuempfig announced that Christmas carols and part of the Sunday school program from Trinity Lutheran Church will be broadcast from the church tower at 7 36 this evening. Attendees may view from outside or attend inside the service.
British bombers strike Berlin with more than 1000 tons of high explosives and fire bombs on Christmas Eve as Pope Pius XII warns there is no quick end to the war. Seventeen bombers are shot down in this 97th raid on Berlin, while Allied campaigns press in Russia and Italy.
J. J. Green, new hotel owner, announced a heating plant installation at the Congress hotel and expects full operations to resume early next week. The Ree Line buses continue to operate with the hotel as depot despite the cold building. Telephone connections are being made and the hotel taxi and restaurant services will use existing numbers.

Japanese claims of air victories were released by Tokyo.

William McKasson of the State highway patrol announced a renewal extension for chauffeurs to June 22, extending the window for next year’s licenses. He reported heavy daily signups with 121 by 10 am and expected 209 by noon, possibly 500 by day’s end, aided by two licensing assistants. Some truck drivers had already secured 1944 licenses in other counties.
A marriage license was issued yesterday afternoon to Gilbert W. Frits of Wellman and Ann.
Pfc. Austin Leroy Whetstine of Richmond receives the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the Mediterranean zone. He piloted a mounted machine gun in a half track, helped repulse enemy waves, and earned praise for marksmanship and leadership under fire. He is one of four Whetstine brothers serving in the U S Army.
President Roosevelt announced Dwight D. Eisenhower will command the forthcoming combined attack against Germany with air, sea, and land forces. He will be succeeded in the Mediterranean by a British officer. Lt. Gen. Carl A Spaate will lead the American bombing forces against Germany.
The low last night reached six degrees above zero, ten degrees higher than the prior night. Today a cold wind persists with cloudy skies and a hint of possible snowfall.
By yesterday the county treasurer reported 2 438 automobiles licensed for 1944, with licenses averaging above 100 daily since December 1. The 2,500 mark was not reached until January 19 last winter, and licenses for trucks 480 trailers 312 and seven motorcycles.
