Ss. E. Steeves of Lincoln Nebraska, a salesman with 15 years of error free driving, drove into a ditch to avoid children in Centerville. The car turned over three times. he and his wife were not seriously hurt. He called the episode the accident that they weren’t killed.
Fletcher C. Miller of Gray says two prior state motor vehicle department applications failed to yield a driver’s license. He plans to send a money order for the 25 cent fee with a third application, hoping for recourse if the license again does not arrive.
Albert Ausdal, 23, suffered a leg fracture when he was pinned between his stalled car and a second vehicle driven by Ford Smith, a local mail carrier. Ausdal was pushing his car at a stop sign when Smith’s car slid into him.
Christmas greetings from death row in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison likely will reach friends and relatives of Arch Breeding of Red Oak who was condemned to hang for the murder of his wife. Col. Glenn Caines, warden, requested permission to mail cards and Col. Haynes estimated that approval had been granted.
Superintendent Arthur Deamer is ordered to bar from local schools any political propaganda or material not issued through regular board channels. The ruling cites a magazine communication that says students should not be asked to pay for supplementary materials and that future materials will be purchased in the usual manner.
Fort Dodge fire chief H J Callahan and councilman W L Engelbart visited Webster City to inspect the damage from last Friday's fire and criticized the local firefighting equipment.

Lionel Distilled Products of Chicago Illinois reported to the Iowa liquor commission that 1540 Iowa liquor seals had been stolen from the distillery plant. Dr M E Abrahams director of research and control said in a letter to Chairman Bernard Manley that the theft was discovered December 1.
A resolution favoring immediate payment of adjusted service certificates for World War II veterans was passed by the Webster county board of supervisors. Copies were mailed to President Roosevelt Ben L Dickinson Senator Louis Murphy and Representative Fred Christ.
The Journal will not publish tomorrow in observance of Christmas as part of a long standing local custom.
Des Moines reports suggest Iowa’s 1936 U.S. Senate race will be highly mobile with several possible outcomes. Potential Republican contenders include Lester J. Dickinson and Smith W. Brookhart while Democrats may see Clyde Herring or N. G. Kraschel vie for the nomination. Brookhart, a prominent figure, is repeatedly discussed as a leading opponent to the Roosevelt administration and AAA policy.
The Washington Townsend club will meet Thursday at the court house. George F. E. Wahl of Burlington will speak on the Townsend plan. The public is invited to attend. President is William James and J A Sutton is secretary.

Federal agents sealed six arrests in Davenport after seizing 87 counterfeit five dollar bills and locating the bogus money in a handbag left at a local hotel. Four men and two women were taken into custody as investigators pursued the case.

Members of the first Iowa congressional district gather in Washington January 22 for a tax problems conference called by State Senator A. Claire Dewey. Officials plan to organize taxpayers associations in each county to affiliate with the Iowa Taxpayers' association. Washington Chamber of Commerce aids in arrangements.
Hundreds toured Washington's residential district to view outside and inside decorations as judges awarded prizes to Ella Anderson, J T Rehmel, Frank Miler, Sherman's Funeral Home, and A L Schmoeller. The judges found the task difficult amid bright trees and wreaths.
The seventh annual Christmas party by the Y W C A was held yesterday at four PM in the west lobby of the Y M C A. It drew 196 children with 172 attending and gifts of candy canes oranges and a tree decorated by Y's Men. Mrs Lester Orr chaired for seven years and led the event with Mrs Stutsman and Girl Scouts assisting.
The county clerk reports a rising wedding license trade with two licenses issued yesterday nearing year end. Clerk Bob Noonan expects potential Christmas and New Year weddings to push totals toward 100 for 1935, after a slow first half and a busier second half.
Funeral services for John Pfeifer who died at his Brighton home yesterday at age 81 will be held Wednesday at 1 30 PM at his residence with burial in Brighton Hillcrest cemetery.
Death reported this morning in Omehs of Mrs George Lohlein aged about 70 following an operation yesterday. She was a sister of Frank Bruty of this community and lived here many years ago. Two years ago she visited Washington to see her brother and other relatives.
William Lafayette McConnell age 81 longtime Washington county auditor and resident of Ainsworth Iowa died suddenly at his home after attending church. He was born August 30 1854 in Blount County Tennessee and lived most of his life in Iowa. He is survived by his widow four sons and three daughters and a brother and sister. Funeral arrangements are to be announced.
Joseph N. Shaw of Scranton Pennsylvania died at age after a career starting as a Rock Island clerk in Washington. He rose to a prominent Lackawanna railway official in the east. His first wife Martha Gatlin died in 1923. He is survived by sister Miss Jennie Shaw in Davenport and brother Robert Shaw once with Rock Island. He was active in church and lodge circles.
A silent fire alarm went to the telephone office and called firemen to 632 South Third Avenue. A smoking register caused fear of fire but there was no damage and the department was notified as a precaution.
The U S will feature white edged in green for Christmas with snow across New England to the Rockies and a green Christmas on the west coast. A northwest cold wave drives temps to zero and below in the Midwest with Iowa reporting eight below at Charles City and flurries possible in parts of the state.
In Keokuk Iowa firemen battled a blaze in zero weather at three this morning rescuing several residents including an 8 9 year old woman and an infant from the front and rear porches. The three story Kibourne building dating to the 1850s housed a civil war general. One man treated for frozen feet. The fire originated in the coal room and spread rapidly engulfing the structure in minutes.
Announcement of further donations to the Good Fellows fund to supply Christmas baskets for the needy. Contributions include Henry Shields two dollars Winfield Smouse two dollars Joe Link one dollar J O Matthews one dollar Helen Monroe fifty cents H E Keating of Haskins six dollars and fifty cents.
Christmas will be a quiet day in Washington with most shops and offices closed. Post office and courthouse offices will be shut and there is no newspaper tomorrow. St James Church holds three dawn and morning Masses, Trinity Lutheran hosts a 6:30 service with a carol broadcast, and the Y M C A plans to open from 3 PM for the remainder of Christmas Day.
