A column notes Wernell Diebel, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Diebel, won Major Bowes Des Moines amateur hour on December 1. A former Drake University piano student, he continues study in New York. Diebel’s mother doubts a Bowes tour. Alberta Antle, 18, Marshalltown contralto, placed fifth.
Des Moines faces an all-time high in automobile fatalities for the year with 50 deaths within city limits, double last year’s 25 and near the 1930 peak of 40. Injuries total 98, down from the prior year, while overall accidents have declined.
Edward W. Stitt plans another attempt to break the world record for continuous flight by a class four airplane. His prior attempt ended in Toledo, Ohio when he was forced down, with authorities at the airport noting secrecy surrounds the project.
Davenport chauffeurs and tax drivers show higher pass rates on license exams than professional drivers or private car owners, according to Ed Murray state license chief who conducted examinations locally.
Drake University psychologists tested emotional stability by galvanometer readings. Graduate students blindfolded subjects, attached a small electric current via wires, and produced a sudden noise to provoke a reaction. Nearly 900 people braved a snow storm Sunday to hear Handel s The Messiah at the Methodist church performed by a Washington church voice group. Miss Carolyn Hamilton directed the choir and Margaret Corbin sang all soprano solos due to laryngitis. Organist Mrs Henry Shields delivered refined accompaniment. Proceeds were slated to cover expenses. the event showcased strong community church music and Christmas observance.
Secretary Clarence Logan of the Washington Chamber of Commerce says the Christmas shopping period has been strong with well filled stores and crowded Saturdays. Trade estimates exceed last year, farmers are cash rich, and shoppers travel from longer distances, broadening the Washington trade area.

Washington county reports 1,006 new year car registrations with 92 trucks, compared to 1,028 cars and 82 trucks a year ago. The latest Saturday figures include 10 new Chevrolet cars and one Chevrolet truck as county officials update registration totals.

Faulty brakes blamed in the Appomattox river bus tragedy at Hopewell Virginia costing fourteen lives. An inquest set for Thursday to determine responsibility as the river search yielded more bodies despite the bus being recovered.

Iowa state agents joined Clayton county authorities in a search for two hold up men who robbed farmer John Harter near Guttenberg of about $6000 in cash and securities last Saturday. He was held at gunpoint while two others ransacked his house.
George Buckley vice president of National City Bank of New York former president of Crowell Publishing and former Chicago Herald Examiner publisher returned to his hometown for funeral services at L A Jones funeral home and Elm Grove cemetery He died Thursday in New York and was 55. Notables from New York Chicago and Washington attended including M C Meigs Charles Frey and Malcolm McHarg.
The funeral service for George Buckley vice president of National City Bank of New York and City Bank Farmers Trust was held at St Vincent Ferrer church on 66th Street and Lexington Avenue at 11 o clock Friday morning. The church was crowded.
The Goodfellows coupon drive ends today as the fund nears two thirds of last year’s total. Baskets of Christmas dinner will be distributed tomorrow under John Lemmon of the U's Men's club. New donations include four anonymous one dollar gifts signed A Friend, plus amounts from M R Meek J Carries the Enterprise school Journal and Crones.
John A. Luers, 76, died at 1 15 am at his daughter’s home near Keota after a long illness. A Dutch Creek township native, he lived much of his life there and helped shape local affairs. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 pm at St Pauls Evangelical Church Valley, with Rev Carl W Klein officiating, burial Oak Ridge cemetery Dutch Creek. Funeral arrangements by L A Jones Funeral Home. He was born August 24 1859 and married Emily Augustine in 1890. He is survived by two brothers Herman of West Chester and Henry D Luers of Rubio and two sisters Mrs A L Mayer of Wellston and Mrs H R Brinning of West Chester.
Albert Ross, 26, of Davenport Iowa, was sentenced in Kankakee for the murder of William Ziems 76 owner of a grocery store robbed for one dollar on November 4. Ross pleaded guilty and chose prison over the electric chair.
London reports Eden named foreign secretary signaling a warning to Mussolini that Britain will defend the league of nations and reject peace proposals. Britain also vows a historic army reorganization as Italy contemplates reinforcing Libya. Italian reaction in Rome brands Eden an arch enemy and fears oil embargo could mean war.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh and wife flee the United States with their son Jon aboard the American Importer to establish a quiet life in England. They sailed secretly from New York amid threats and the Hauptmann case, aiming for anonymity and possible permanent exile.
