Iowa announces new safety rules to reduce slow moving vehicle crashes. Starting January 1, 1972, tractors combines and other off highway units must display flashing amber lights and a SMV emblem when traveling at 25 mph or slower on highways.
The Iowa State Agriculture Department notes a strong surge in fertilizer use by farm and home gardeners. Director R R Thorsheim reports over 2.6 million tons used in the past year, far beyond 462,436 tons a decade earlier in the 1950s.
Des Moines Iowa. Dick A Witt 41 resigned effective immediately from the Iowa Commerce Commission citing health problems. Witt had served since 1965 after being named by Gov Harold E Hughes. Gov Robert D Ray accepted the resignation and said a Democrat will be sought as successor. Witt had been sidelined 10 weeks after being found unconscious in his Des Moines apartment and hospitalized with acute high blood pressure.
Travelers flock by air rail and road for the Christmas weekend with many joyful reunions. Some servicemen fly home from Vietnam as POW letters bring hope. Airports like Chicago O’Hare see heavy crowds while safety officials warn 520 to 620 traffic deaths in the 78 hour period, compared with 504 last year.
Variable cloudiness in Iowa with colder air moving in. Overnight lows range from the 20s in the northwest to the lower 40s in the southeast. Friday highs reach near 30 in the northwest and around 50 in the southeast.

Mary Ann Harbert, 26, freed after nearly four years in Chinese custody, arrived in San Francisco aboard a jetliner and reunited with her parents and sister. She described captivity on a farm commune with poor food and no work requirements, saying she did not know if she was in Chinese waters and noting a government announcement confirmed her release.
A major winter storm moved through the west bringing rain and snow while northern temperatures chilled the Northeast. Sierra Nevada and Montana faced travel warnings as winds gusted to 50 mph. Lakeview Oregon reported two inches of snow and San Francisco Bay area outages affected about 50,000 homes. Dozens of boats beached or sunk in San Mateo County as winds hit around 60 mph with no injuries reported.
President Nixon signed a 1.6 billion three year plan to fight cancer directing focus on research and early detection of oral cervical and breast cancers and creating 15 treatment and research centers. He appointed Benno C. Schmidt to chair a three member presidential panel to oversee NCI. The bill funds a watchdog panel over NCI within NIH and ends weeks of congressional dispute over agency control.
The state fire marshal’s office investigated a fire that gutted a large portion of the Brinkman Implement Co in Clarion. Volunteers were called twice Wednesday night as the blaze re ignited hours after initial control. Tools parts and office records were lost though several trucks and equipment were saved.
Rolling Meadows an educational and activity center for handicapped adults opened Dec 6 at the county fairgrounds then moved to the Christian Church. It faces $4000 debt and staffing losses but coordinator Melvin Schneider stays optimistic as it seeks a permanent building and potential county funding.
